Hi guys and gals...

I was just curious about testing some ram I had bought through Ebay... Which way would anyone test it?? Simplest and most effective way of doing it? I was thinking maybe Memtest or something??

It's nothing special ram, just G Skill 2400Mhz stuff ( this stuff in fact... ) not that the board I have it (Asus Prime H270-Plus) in actually seems to want to work at 2400Mhz with the old stuff, so 2133Mhz it is but... lol I think I'm missing something simple here but I just thought I'd ask :)

Thanks in advance!

XMP doesn't work on your board? Do you have a part number for the RAM? Yeah, Memtest is the go-to.

There was a link in the eBay page above but it's this one!

No idea why it doesn't work, didn't with the 4Gb stick of Corsair stuff I had.. It might need a bios update or something I guess.. Nothing is overclocked in this system, whatsoever!! Memtest it is :) A few passes do it? Just leave it running overnight? :)

As @erocker mentions, goto your BIOS and load the XMP profile from the RAM, it should set it to all the right timings and speed. That is, unless you have other memory installed too, then it'll run at the lowest common denominator. Memtest = yes for testing

I'm pretty sure that's meant to work, but for some reason, the ram speed just doesn't set to 2400Mhz, it's just running at 2133Mhz.. Now I know that this is going to make next to sod all difference and even less so as my Mum will be using the system, but I have no idea why it won't post with the XMP profile loaded.. I could try it in my other boards, but I have no PSU and not the will to swap everything all about.. I've got some pics on my phone, I'll grab them up and upload them.. Wish I had a clue and the other boards I have here, I'm sure would be fine (Z170 OCF's..)

I'm just going to get one thing out of the way and say, it's not going to be anything at all to do with the CPU that's in there is it?? I'm not being stupid in anyway, but I really don't think that would make any difference at all ever, would it??

Go there and grab the freeware version of Taiphoon Burner. Click on the read icon in the header once opened, and select the channels that correspond to each set of RAM. If G.Skill filled out the SPD information, you may find that the ICs on both kits are different, and may be causing issues.

As for testing, I would try the new kit all by itself. See if XMP sets them to 2400 MHz as advertised.

That's all that's in there.. I only had a single 4Gb stick before and this is why I bought Mum 16Gb.. It's complete overkill in a way, but second hand price for a 4Gb stick was over £40 from Ebay, £60 new from Scan delivered and then this 16Gb kit caught my eye, I paid £120 for it posted.. Bit more than I wanted to spend really but for 3 times the price, I have now twice as much ram.. Or even better, just about 50% (maybe a little more) cost of a brand new 16Gb kit.. Ram prices are stupid at the moment!

Here's a few pictures from the build.. It's really nothing exciting, but it'll be plenty for going online and my niece's homework!! :)

So as far as I can see, everything is right and XMP picks up the proper timings but it just refuses to load.. Oh well.. I'm thinking my Mum won't come to me saying, why isn't our DDR4 ram performing at 2400Mhz as it was advertised!

I am noticing the timings of the XMP profile do not match that which is shown on the sticker.

If it were mine, I would enable XMP, drop down to speed and set 2400, then move down to the DRAM timing control and set 15-16-16 and see if it boots.

Not positive, but I am seeing that Celeron shows 2133 as its RAM speed. It could be a CPU limitation, but never owning or playing with one, I do not know for sure.

I've tried setting it one 'notch' above 2133 (2266 I think) it just doesn't post.. I can't be bothered with it really lol I was just curious if anyone else had had the same issues with the board.. It was used for my mining rig a while ago, was as stable as a rock for months, no issues with it at all.. But this ram issue is definitely odd.. I might try a bios update and see if that makes any difference.. I'm sure if there is one, but I'll give it a go! :)

Thanks to all for the replies, spot on, thank you!! :) :toast:

The DIMMs show two different timings on the stickers, so I would say they are not a 16GB kit, rather two mismatched DIMMs someone sold as a kit.

Oh snap! Nice catch there. I looked at the lowest image when comparing to his other screen shots.

Thanks for pointing that out, the timings a very similar and even the link shows it as a single stick of ram.. I'll raise it with the seller and see if I can get some cash refunded... G Skill ram specs

I'm not sure it'll matter too much, but I'll try and set the timings to the slower one and see if it posts.. It's just running through the second pass of Memtest at the moment, no errors at this time... :)

EDIT - I've also just noticed, that I can't even see that second stick on G Skills site.. Here

15-15-15-35 but no 15-16-16-35.. Maybe they had a rouge batch or something? But it does state on the ram specs, that the SPD or XMP whichever you prefer is only 2133Mhz.. How strange....

I think everything was set to auto to be honest, but the DRAM speed.. Just didn't want to boot.. I'll have a look at it this evening and give it a test if I set it manually..

It's weird to me that even on the G Skill site, it doesn't show the ram with those timings!

or just up the ramvolt to 1.25v
but i think second profile with 15-16-16 will work on both

I did try the volts last night, but it never made a blind bit of difference.. For such a small performance increase, I'm really not so worried about it.. But it does state on G Skills site that it's XMP is only 2133Mhz not 2400Mhz even though it's 2400Mhz ram.. Strange :)

1. I use memtest86+ to test RAM, 12 hours overnight for 16 GB

2. You board definitely does support XMP, at least according to Asus web site.
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/PRIME-H270-PLUS/specifications/

4 x DIMM, Max. 64GB, DDR4 2400/2133 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel Memory Architecture
Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)

3. Using RAM at XMP will sometimes require a boost in DRAM voltage in BIOS. Given that they have different native timings and looks like different vendors, it may take a significant boost. For DDR4, I wouldn't think you'd need to go above 1.225 but Intel doesn't get antsy until you get above 1.35v (direct quote from Intel).

4. The stability of XMP, is hampered by not having a matched pair. The stickers bith say 1 x 8GB kit and have different timings. Always by RAM for dual channel motherboards. Turn on XMP and then manually set the timings to the higher CAS setting (15-16-16-35) and give it a shot.

5. From GSkill web site
http://gskill.com/en/product/f4-2400c15s-8gnt

Tested Speed 2400MHz
Tested Latency 15-15-15-35
Features Intel XMP 2.0 (Extreme Memory Profile) Ready

6. What commonly happens over time is that as production yields improve over time due to production line tweaking, RAM vendords are able to reduce timings at the same or better yields... the one with better timings is from a later production run. When you see RAM advertised, it is always done so at the XMP setting, 2133 is the default speed when installed because 2133 is the highest speed recognized by the JEDEC specifications (at least at time of production). Use CPUz or some other utility (SPD tab) to view the settings for this particular RAM modules.... 2266 may not be natively supported.
