Hi, I'm kind of new to overclocking, and I've been running mild stable OC for my system for about a year or so and just recently noticed this weirdness.

My 2800 MHz RAM (28x multiplier, XMP disabled, auto voltage) timing shows CL20 in CPU-Z, while in BIOS it shows CL15, as you can see in the picture.
It's originally 2400 MHz (XMP Enabled) CL14. With XMP profile, the timing in CPU-Z and BIOS match.
If I leave XMP enabled while changing to 28x multiplier, it will boot loop, turning off and on by itself for few times times before POST. So I disabled the XMP.

What's happening to my OC? How will this affect my system performance and which configuration I should keep?

System spec:
Ryzen 1700X 3.8GHz @1.3v
Gigabyte AX370 Gaming 5
Team T-Force Dark 2x8GB (stock 2400MHz CL14, OC to 2800MHz CL20?)
MSI GTX 1080 Ti Trio
EVGA Supernova 750 G3

Thank you!

I would use thaiphoon burner to identify what ram you have, and then Ryzen dram calculator to see how far you can overclock........

CL 20 2800mhz is pretty loose timings, if you can stick it out at 2800mhz and try and tighten the timings Ryzen will always run better on fast speed ram with tight timings

Hence why most people use samsung b-die 14,14,14,28 3200mhz

They are both terrible for ryzen I would download Shadow of the Tomb Raider Demo it has a built in benchmark and run it at 720p/Medium and see what gives you a higher average framerate it's one of the better games at showing cpu scaling.

Ideally you'd be running 3000/3200 with as tight of timings as possible.

CL20 2800mhz might perform worse than 2400mhz CL14.

If I want to upgrade, do you think these ram are good?
GSkill Flare X 3200 CL16
Corsair LPX 3200 CL16

I can't find any CL14 3200 here without breaking the bank.

Thanks, I will try downloading Shadow of The Tomb Raider demo later.

I'm aware that Ryzen 1000 runs better with faster RAM, but I did not have much choice. I build my PC when 1st gen Ryzen came out, April 2017, and RAM compatibility was so bad at that time. But I needed a PC so I chose RAM with recommended 2400MHz speed that is listed in QVL.

Do you think 3200 CL16 kit I listed above are good enough?

Anything 3200 CL16 or better is fine but I would stay away from LPX memory though.

Why is it? I read reviews saying LPX memory is good and reasonably priced.

It's decent memory but more often than not especially with 1st gen ryzen I've seen too many people with issues.... Works perfectly with Intel.
