Hi there... got this old mobo still working. i had 8GB memory (4x2gb Gskill sitcks). one of them got faulty so i am now woking with 6gb.
Read about some users that got 16GB working on this mobo and others X48 LGA 775 systems with some tweaks even thouht in theory only 8GB max support....
Can anyone point me in the right direction? i would like to start with basics and see if system boots with a 1x 4GB sticks and then go from there...

Lucky you have one of this board which I am still trying to find one on the verge of converting into something out of this world. Anyways I have the Maximus 2 formula with ddr2 version of the same look like motherboard but P45 chipset, it supports 16gb out of the box.

Coming from your point of view back in the days people had 16gb running on these boards. I had 790i Ultra instead and it too supported only 8gb. However 1066mhz 16gb ran just fine for me.

Taking into consideration people at overclockers ran 16gb just fine with no issue. Which rams are you willing to go with ? Do you have something spare lying around or need to buy ?

That is a VERY desireable board - I had one but sold it not too long ago and yes, it's worth alot of $$ compared to may others due to the demand for those.
Only real way to know if it will work with those sticks is to try it - At least try two sticks, see if it goes then go for all four.

Really? Didnt know it was such a rarity.... its still my day to day machine, with Intel Core2Duo E8500 processor and a nvidia gforce 660 graphic card.
Back in 2008 i bought this baby becouse DFI model i was thinking was out of stock. It was state of the art back then.

So i had 8gb (4x2gb) gskil sticks but one got broken and i am now with 6gb.
And as it might be difficult to get a single stick same model was willing to change to something more.
Problably gskill ripjaws cl9 4gb sticks.... or Corsair and get more power

Just for curiosity how much would worth the board, if i were to sell it?

It's not a case of "Name your price" but you can feasably ask $200 and probrably get it, depending on the buyer possibly more.

I wish I could have kept mine but thats how it goes.
Great board and can be the foundation of a nice, basic daily even today for web browsing and such but don't expect it to be a gamer vs what's available today.
Way better options for all that.

As for RAM, you can get a set of 2x 8GB DDR3 sticks (4GB per stick) for a decent price but make sure they are all the same. Corsair sticks can be found but Corsair is all over the place for what could be in them for IC's, even with the same model and version/revision of a set. Others do it too but I'd make Corsair as one to only get if you must because of it.

CL9's are OK and not all that expensive, even a set of CL10's will do but for most larger, newer sets you'll probrably never get their full speed capability anyway from that setup.

Think I got $300 for the X48 just a few years back, But i had everything, the box and all accessories too. Even the accessories are worth a lot now.

I used to have the DFI UT X48 T2RS and the Abit IX38 Quad GT back in the day. I have fond memories of both the X38 and X48 chipsets. I never ran more than 8GB in each one. I ran a lot of core 2 Duo's (E8500, E8600, E8700) Quad's (Q6600, Q9550) and finally a pair of X3380's in them. Great motherboards for overclocking. I kept mine until the Z97 and the i7 4790k hit the market. I used Corsair XMS 2's in my systems and they worked without problem to 8GB. Good Luck:toast: .

If it's DDR2, you'll be lucky to get 8 GB rock stable with the DRAM voltage set to 1.9 V and at 333 Mhz with all slots filled. (666/667)

VR HMD No headset yet
Software Windows 11 OS... Not a fan!!
Benchmark Scores I've actually never benched it!! Too busy with WCG and FAH and not gaming! :( :( Not OC'd it!! :(
I guess it's a bit like the SR-2 in the regard, it might work but will it work 100% supported? I think that most or if not, all of the 775 CPUs are able to see 8GB max? Maybe the Xeon's might be 16GB but Xeon's are always a bit of a different kettle of fish...

Intel Q6600 Spec Sheet
Intel QX9650 Spec sheet
Intel Xeon X3360 Spec Sheet

None of the few above have any max memory mentioned in the spec list...

I wonder what the original Rampage Formula X48 DDR2 board is worth :wtf:

:D
I think I had my boxed board for about £30! Was an utter bargain to me to be honest :)

Socket 775 processors don't have IMCs, they were the last, besides 771 to use FSB. Back in those days, it seemed that motherboards made bigger differences in what was supported. Because the memory controller was on the motherboard chipset. Thus, a P45 motherboard will be better than P43, for example.

About X48? It wouldn't surprise me if they can get a lot more out of a chip, but a lot look like they are satisfied with P45.

If the board is a Rampage Extreme X48 board it's uses DDR3, not DDR2.
I know some of the x48 chipped boards did run DDR2 such as the Rampage Formula but the REX is strictly a DDR3 board.

I couldn't get 8GB to work on my X48, but they were mixed G.Skill PC8500 and Dominator PC8500. They work, just not together..

OK the DDR3 X48 boards were the very last ones before the switch to LGA1366. Abit had X48 GT3, Foxxconn had X48 Black Ops, DFI had X48 T3RS, and ASUS had X48 REX.

I am using 16GB of Corsair Vengeance 1.5v 1600 cl9 currently in my Z97 with i7 4790k. I have 8GB (2 x 4) of 10700 running with 8GB (2 x 4) of 10700H. The modules are slightly mismatched but play well together @1.5v in the Z97. I don't overclock any more and run my 4790k at 4.00GHz Turbo. I don't know how the X48 will handle the Corsair Vengeance, but I would try them 1st. Good Luck:D

I have been unable to find a review of the X48 GT3, only the X38 QuadGT. Did the GT3 ever make it to market?

Yes the Abit IX48-Max GT3 made it to market. It was sold mainly in Europe. I have seen them for sale in France and Germany. I don't recall any in the US market.

I've got an active ebay search for them. I know review websites come and go, but none of the major ones seemed to have gotten their hands on one. Thanks for the answer, I was wondering if Abit folded before they could get it out.

I do still have my IP35 Pro that has an easy retirement life, but if I could grab an X48 GT3 I would for funsies.

Yes Abit built the IP-45 Pro, the IP-43, and the IX48-MaxGT3 ( also known as the Hotfoot). This was just before they folded. I just found some pictures from the UK overclocking forums. You might get lucky and find one. I think the GT3 had the funny looking Northbridge cooler.

These are the best pictures I was able to find. The board layout to me is just gorgeous in combination with those copper heatsinks. That heatpiped copper northbridge sink is really nice.

Yeah, that is the heatsink. The Abit boards had nice heatsinks. I loved my IX38 Quad GT heatsinks and mosfet coolers. The IP-45 Pro has a peculiar northbridge cooler also. Be vigilant and search the european sites. The IX48-GT3 also went by the name Tigerforce, MAX, and Hotfoot. Good Luck.

regarding memory support: I don't have a definitive answer, but:

"legit" 4GB DDR2 DIMM's did exist... except they came so late that BIOS support is spotty.
confusingly, the P45 chipset is newer than X48 (48x was basically a stepping of earlier X38) and ... X48 officially was only certified by Intel for DDR3. which means...
... it's unknown if Intel ever released a reference firmware supporting 4GB DDR2 DIMMS for X38, let alone X48 where they "officially" didn't support DDR2 operation.

thus reports of 16GB (assuming 4 4GB sticks) on X48 would be biased toward DDR3. You'd have to explicitly be sure those reports were for DDR2 on X48.

This thread on OS/2 Museum is regarding P45, but the comments someone brings up X48. https://www.os2museum.com/wp/ddr2-4gb-dimms/

I'm just posting all this in that - maybe the info is helpful but - if you happen to get that unknown combo of unobtainable working they'd love to know.
Good Luck!

I never got to try anything but 2GB sticks on my X38 and X48 and P45 boards. They all used DDR2 and I had plenty of Corsair XMS2 sticks at that time. The DFI UT X48-T2RS and T3RS supported 8GB of memory but probably only 2GB DIMMS per slot as in my T2RS.
