Hi all...
i've been having random crashes resuming from sleep or hibernation. sometimes a crash dump would be generated and a bsod displayed, at other times it just restarts while resuming and throws up a message windows wasn't properly shut down :(

yesterday i got a crash dump as well with just a restart (without a bsod) while i was trying to bring up the issue again by putting the comp to sleep and wake again.
the dump was generated from a resume from hibernation, the first try at the resume was unsuccessful with a message appearing saying the same thing and asking whether i should try again to resume the system or restart afresh, i chose to resume, the desktop appeared for like 5 seconds and then the bsod.

here is the analysis from that dump.

*******************************************************************************

KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR (77)
The requested page of kernel data could not be read in. Caused by
bad block in paging file or disk controller error.
In the case when the first arguments is 0 or 1, the stack signature
in the kernel stack was not found. Again, bad hardware.
An I/O status of c000009c (STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR) or
C000016AL (STATUS_DISK_OPERATION_FAILED) normally indicates
the data could not be read from the disk due to a bad
block. Upon reboot autocheck will run and attempt to map out the bad
sector. If the status is C0000185 (STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR) and the paging
file is on a SCSI disk device, then the cabling and termination should be
checked. See the knowledge base article on SCSI termination.
Arguments:
Arg1: 00000001, (page was retrieved from disk)
Arg2: 00000006, value found in stack where signature should be
Arg3: 00000000, 0
Arg4: 8cf0fb60, address of signature on kernel stack

i have carried out diskchecks and memory checks with the windows memory diagnostics running in extended mode with no errors being thrown up...

i have been introduced to all such system crashes ever since i upgraded my graphics card to ati (i know this time the disk/memory seem at fault). i have worked on my xp system for several years on integrated graphics without ever even a single bsod....i would then be just left wondering why people bitch about bsod's n what not...lol :D.

thanks for taking the time for going through my post...some help please.. :)

I'l make a random guess and say that your PSU doesnt have enough juice. AMD recommends a minimum of a 400watt PSU. and i think with all the other stuff you have hooked up the drain on the PSU is exceeding its capabilities.

and like you said. you didnt get all these BSODs until you put the ATi card in.

Id recommend getting an Antec Earthwatts 650w PSU, they are very fairly priced and provide plenty of juice for your current setup and anything you might want to put in, in the future.

If that is still too expensive go for the 500watt varient. but i highly recommend sticking with the 650w for peice of mind when it comes to adding new hardware. you dont need to worry if your PSU will be able to cope.

thanks for the reply... actually as far as the power consumption is concerned, my apc ups shows my cpu consumes just 27 watts on idle, which rises to max 105 watts under full system load, both proc and graphics card being used ¬90%. now i dunno how correct it is but it did correctly report what my monitor was consuming...so i doubt its much off from whats the real figure.
the psu is just over an year old so i'm hopin its not the case that its going the way of the dodo...however i will try and get another psu to test out whats happening in the next few days.

i've presenly installed ubuntu to try and rule out whether its the software or hardware at fault.

So your pc works fine except for standby and hibernation? If that's true then I'd say it's very likely a driver misbehaving, it's fairly common. Update with all the latest (generally good idea anyway).

Try rebuilding your profile (or create a new account) on the computer and test from that log on and report back.

When you have installed Ubuntu, use it's "restricted drivers" functionality (should auto-pop in the system tray in the right upper corner) to install the video drivers and enable hardware acceleration (else VESA mode will be used).

chevalr1c yes i've enabled that already.

drdna i haven't yet tried from a new profile yet

robn turns out the display driver wasn't the latest (even not the latest whql) i've installed catalyst v11.5 and the system feels noticeably much quicker to resume from (and even entering) standby now. :) i've tried many times now but haven't encountered the issue yet...but can't say anything for sure for now. will watch for a day or two and see what happens.
