so lately i've been having these GPU driver crashes while while gaming
i'll be playing normally and then randomly, BOOM! game locks up for a few seconds, followed by a black screen, then i get my screen back but whatever game i'm currently playing either crashes completely closed, or needs to be closed.
this has been going on for about i'd say a month now give or take. and i've absolutely had it.
i can NOT seem to pin down the cause. event viewer tells me fuck all. and i've used ddu at LEAST 3 or 4 times now.
at first i thought it could be the driver version. but NOPE. i've tried multiple versions and it does it regardless.
i've done everything i could possibly think of just about aside from a full os reinstall. i'd try a different slot on my mobo but that's not possible as that would cover my M2 ssd and my cmos battery.
i even did a virus scan and that came back negative.
I'm running the latest windows and nvidia drivers.
my specs are as followed:

Are you 100% positive you have an 8GB card? If so what did you use to pull your specs.. Could be your issue right there

It's a bug in speccy and some other programs, which is easy to determin since there is no 4GB version of the 1070.

Classic GPU core instability! Usually means GPU core OC'ed too much, need very cool air for the GPU core OC or need to tweak the GPU Vcore. And this would happen with GTA V. :(

I've been dealing with this on my Radeon RX 5600XT, with a custom VBIOS, until I changed some settings and/or have more cool air on the GPU heatsink. FYI, to non-Radeon users, AMD calls the GPU core the "SCLK".

Acknowledged that you have Nvidia.

And with a GPU core crash, I find it less likely to show up in Windows reports, you probably will get nothing but a "display driver stopped responding and recovered" message or Windows complaining of not shutting down properly, which probably will result in Windows nicking you with a "Critical" level event.

I don't believe Windows bugchecked.

Well my GPU isn't overclocked and you're right i went into event viewer and i got told literally nothing relevant

Does event viewer record a WHEA error?
Not related to my GPU that i can see

many GPUs that are used a lot CAN degrade after around 5 years by a couple Mhz.
my 1080Tis (two) are both slightly degraded.

download the latest driver and DDU.
go into the device manager and disable your LAN/Wifi.
hold shift while clicking on restart, go into troubleshooting, starting options and reboot into safe mode (press number 4 when it rebooted and ask what you want to do.) (safe mode without network)

open DDU, select GPU/NVidia and run uninstall/restart.

after it restarted install the driver.
after installing the driver, re enable your LAN/Wifi in the device Manager.

look if it still crashes and monitor your temperatures with HWInfo or GPU Z.

Hmm i tried that a few times but no dice. but i'll use one of programs you suggested in the meantime.
also i had no idea that gpu's could degrade...and i bought mine in late 2017 so yeah, it's been almost 5 years....i'd like a new one but we all know the situation with GPU's atm :(

could you download MSI Afterburner and decrease the clockspeed by like 30 mhz and try it again?

I had this exact same issue a while ago. What fixed it for me was turning the power management mode in Control Panel from Prefer Maximum Performance to Optimal Power.

After reading the nvidia forums, this is a very common issue with no apparent fix as this crashing could mean literally anything. A lot of people have found success in putting the power management to Prefer maximum performance or rolling back to an older driver. This could also be caused by a hardware issue, and you might have to replace the card if all else fails.

Edit: You should also try underclocking the card as GerKNG suggested.

Sadface. while i have the money to buy a new GPU, my issue is the same one everyone is having at the moment.
scalpers are selling for 3x the msrp... and the ones that do get in stock, go instantly...
hell i can't even find another 1070 for msrp. le sigh....
i guess i'll just have to deal with it or hope that the small under clock solves it

Ok! so either under clocking my gpu helped or the total reinstall of the latest drivers via ddu did. either way i don't seem to be having the issue anymore...
time will tell though :) thank you for all who gave advice/suggestions!

So there is a WHEA error?
That's much more likely to occur with unstable VRAM. (AMD calls that "MCLK") Unstable VRAM can cause a WHEA-related BSOD for "Cache Hierarchy Error".
