now I look at it from a slight diff angle, im happy for the guy/lady who sold it, i know he/she/them would of had fees but it would of been a grand result and someone got what thay wanted "smiles around". what it cost is what the buyer valued it at and the seller took a gamble.

Lamo, why the actual fudge would that matter, game is old as hell, also why print date also matters, non of those reasons justify the stupid price, i can easily download it and emulate it on a Celeron IGPU or a budget android phone at 60fps for FREE!!!

The collectors market and its mentally deluded, self destructive, nostalgia junkies can go fudge itself

No game is worth that much, even if it was developed by god himself, i can understand 1000$, anything beyond that is delusion.

Another day, another faith in humanity lost...

Because for a lot collectors 'first press' or 'first edition' means a lot more to them than you or I. its the first batch off the production line before the others. And it means a lot more now since the game has been out of production for decades.

Its like really rare cars. You may have a car that is from the 1930s in showroom condition and whoever made that car might of only made 100 of them so having them numbered is like a sign of authenticity and adds value to the car because its one out of a 100 cars ever made and probably the only one that exists in show room condition.

another example:

You might have a spade from an uncle that dug himself a trench in the Battle of the Somme that is crusty as hell and not worth anything to any average joe, but to a spade collector or a history buff. That spade is worth more than gold.

-- It doesnt matter to you because you are obviously not a collector. Youre not in the business of collecting game memorabilia like this so it doesnt matter to you. But your comment is pretty ignorant imo. if people want to collect stuff and pay big money for things because its their hobby or because they see it as an investment then who are you to criticize them?

Dont be that uncultured.

Lets say i payed nearly a million dollars for a "first edition' wrapped game ancient game, or one of the 100 1930 old cars, or a spade that lets say someone used it to scrape the poop of the president when he was on a picnic ,... What happens then, what could possiblly paying for that stuff give to my life other than setting on a shelf and talk to other about.

Please, culture me

Then you own it and the community that cares about those items knows they've been preserved and are accounted for, not destroyed or lost to time. Collecting is as much about preservation as it is about the egotism of owning a rare item, or the capitalism of increasing the demand and value of those items.

If its truly about preserving, wouldn't it be ideal to sell those items at reasonable prices for most to afford and preserve ?

Read the full sentence and its context instead of lifting the first part out of context. It is as much (the following parts are equal to each other) about preservation, egotism, and valuation.

It's like this in every collector's hobby. Even comic books.

An Action Comics #1 (first appearance of Superman) which originally sold for 10 cents recently sold for 3.25 million dollars.

If I had $870,000 burning a hole in my pocket, I know that I would much rather donate it to charity than spend it on this piece of overpriced garbage. In the very least, I would've spent it on something that has a use, like an expensive house or a supercar.

But that's just me...

just you wait and see! the new owner of this one of a kind rare vintage NES video game cartridge is going to get more 'tang than a thirsty astronaut after they gloat and brag about how cool they are with their "priceless" (except it has a price) possessions. waaaaaaaaaaaay better plan than the tried and true mid life crisis red super car and new toupee routine to feel young again! fuck that, just buy an old video game is the new mid life crisis for some rich dimwit with more money than brains

Might not even work LMAO.

sometimes some of them have the odd capacitor or resistor inside. If the game doesnt work (which is highly unlikely since there isnt any air to eat away at solder traces -- or at least this should be the case) Just replace the caps or resistor.

But then again I dont think we'll ever know or if it matters if these games work or not. I dont think the plastic wrapper is ever going to be removed as it would harm the value of the item.

I have a copy of Dragon Age:Origins unopened, still sealed in plastic. It used to be in the shipping box for year until I decided I need more space on that shelf. Silly me, could have been worth more still in that box...

That word. Condition and authenticity.

But still... what a silly price.

No, It's the physical cartridge and the game that has it. Nintendo revised the design of the cartridges to a three screw design at the very tail end of it's production, the game had already been out for 2 years and almost everyone who wanted a copy already had a copy so and extremely small number made it to store shelves and it was the period were sales were at it's lowest point.

I would assume you think that individual is truly cultured for spending that much for a game because he "truly knows its value" :p

lol

Thats not really how i would use the world 'cultured' and no. Nobody would "truly know its value" because its still gaining value, Even when its sitting in someone's draw or shelf its still gaining value if kept in the same factory sealed mint condition.

The only difference would be if the person buying is a genuine collector that collects things like this as a hobby (or a nostalgia nerd with money) that sees things like these as priceless for sentimental/nostalgic reasons -- This person would be cultured.

or another person, hedge fund/syndicate/conglomerate that sees value in these in the form of pure currency rather than what the game means itself. and there are many examples of this all over the world. Such as the rights to the Terminator franchise that were sold to a hedge fund called 'Pacificor' $29.3mil for it. The franchise would have been worth a lot more money if they didnt run it into the ground with identity politics.

Harmony Gold USA Is a Film/TV production company and they were pretty active in the industry from the 1970s up until 2006 but they now make most of their money off property development & land ownership. meanwhile, they wont allow anyone else to use the intellectual properties that they own or have the rights to. People would love to see more Robotech but that franchise died in the 80s and HG:USA doesnt really care to get back into tv/film and animation any time soon but some how they still own the licence for distribution within theUS/NA.

Some folks/companies out there just buy stuff to hold onto for some 50-100 years as part of their inventory/portfolio till they can get quadruple what they paid for it. -- this is capitalism

Being uncultured is not understanding why a person or a company is willing to throw a few million at something when to you its not worth more than $20. Although there are exceptions to this given different circumstances. Like Activision selling 30 year old games at $60-80 when you bought it for $15-20 back when it was first released. Thats just straight up greed and profiteering.

If people have money to be dumb with. Let them be dumb with it.
