Raspberry Pi Foundation releases operating system for PCs, Macs

The Raspberry Pi foundation has ported the PIXEL OS it released in September to the PC and Mac.

PIXEL stands for “Pi Improved Xwindows Environment, Lightweight” and is, says Pi founder Eben Upton, “our best guess as to what the majority of users are looking for in a desktop environment: a clean, modern user interface; a curated suite of productivity software and programming tools, both free and proprietary.”

Debian+PIXEL for x86 platforms. Simply download the image, burn it onto a DVD or flash it onto a USB stick, and boot straight into the familiar PIXEL desktop environment on your PC or Mac.

With that in mind, I can safely assume that RPi is ready to catch up with the rest of the world (khm... China) by moving to Z8300 on the next Raspberry version, since they've already missed Snapdragon and Exynos by sticking with outdated Broadcom chips.

i'm going to give it go for the usb with the persistant option so i can have a working linux on usb...i've not like other options, will give this one a go

I hope to upgrade from my Raspberry Pi 1 model b+ to the new Rasberry Pi 3 soon. Currently I have RetroPie on it and it works well, but it's showing it's age.. lol

i welcomed a Rpi3 after quite some time with a Rpi2, although i am more on using them as my "TV box" in a aluminum case, Farnell Heatsink on the SOC, 32gb uSD UHS-I (C10) card, Strongtronic 5.1V 2.5A powerbrick plus LibreElec, Kodi and Exodus

the Rpi3 is awesome for that ... the added wifi and bluetooth make it totally worth it, freeing 2 USB in the process, well now i only use 1 USB for the keyboard/touchpad combo and i've finally found a USB3.0 ext HDD that work with it without needing a powered hub (a Maxtor M3 2tb )

now on the topic, the PIXEL OS seems fun ... i guess i will test it on my Dell Dimension 5150 when i get the time to fiddle with it.

(which also remind me that i should sell my Rpi2 and the black aluminum case i have for it ...)

Only used Gen 1 and 2. Never had a chance to get my hands on Gen 3, though ever since I've tried Atom Z3735 and a newer Z8300, I never really wanted to go back to RPi (with the exception of PiZero).

That's the main reason I want to upgrade and the extra USB ports. Thanks for the heads up on the external drive. I'll check it out. I had Kodi on it before, but just recently had the itch to play some retro games.
