I want to get my feet wet again with a custom loop for my 950 + HD6950.

These are in an Obsidian 800D at the moment. I was thinking of going with a 360 up top, and a 120 on the back exhaust port. I could do a 240 on the bottom but I'm not sure if I want to mod this case. I might want to keep it stock in case I sell it down the road.

I was contemplating starting with a XSPC RASA RX360 kit and just add on to it, but I'm thinking I might want to go completely custom. I am thinking I want to go with all black components and fittings, and all white tubing. I know it's very common with the 800D but I really like the way it looks.

I was hoping some people could just offer me any different recommendations on what I should do. I'm starting with a clean slate and a wide open 800D. I'm willing to spend some money on this so I want to go with high quality parts. I also want to take advantage of all the room in this case. Right now I only have one optical drive in there and it only takes up one slot. The hot swap bays are all in use also. So I have 4 (four) optical drive bays wide open, and I have tons of room in this beast.

Looking forward to some suggestions on CPU block, GPU block (would like to avoid EK/Koolance), rads, res, tubing, fittings, pumps, etc.

Alrighty, resident 800D watercooling expert here. I put a 120.4 in the top and a 120.2 in the bottom of mine a while back. Cooled everything in my case(cpu, gpu's, nb). So there's definately room to work and make it custom for you.

I like the black/white scheme, it'll work perfectly :)

CPU block suggestion, EK Supreme HF. Hands down great block. Dont like, Heatkiller's blocks are a bit more expensive but do a great job as well.

GPU blocks, only one I will suggest-Aquacomputer's Aquagrafx blocks. A bit more expensive but the quality is amazing! Check them out for sure! Also Heatcooler makes some slick blocks, defantely worth a nod.

Radiator suggestions: Thermochill, Feser, XSPC are all great. I'd suggest going for a thick rad, but dont count on using crazy large fans(ie 38mm fans). On my Thermochill PA 120.4 I was able to sneak in fans on both sides(standard 25mm thickness) for push/pull. I wouldn't suggest going with a thin rad like the Swiftech unless you think you couldn't fit it. Also, a great 360 rad will outpreform a crappy 360 rad +120/240. You'll be fine with one good 360 to cool your cpu and gpu.

Res: depends on what pump you get. You could do a number of things depending on the build. Let this be your last choice or implement it where it needs fit.

Pump: D5 or equivalent to start, if not 2. The Swiftech MCX35 is excellent and PWM support :)

Tubing: Primochill or Tygon, go big or go home: 1/2"ID 3/4"OD :D

Fittings: Honestly you can save a little here and not go with Bitspower on everything. I'd suggest you look into this near the end of planning because you'll know what you'll need after planning it in(ie, compression, 45º compression, rotary). I'd suggest you check out pricing on multiple sites for Enzotech, Bitspower, and a couple others.

Fans: You forgot fans homey! Go with some strong cfm fans with good static pressure. I used S-Flex 1900's and had great results. The Gentle Typhoons are king rad fans, but expensive. Many people suggest Yate Loon Mediums because they are cheap and do great. I'd go with S-Flexs again if I had the chance. :)

Lastly, plan it out well in advance. Get the dimensions down pat before you order. Spending $400 on WC only to have complications with fitting it will seriously piss you off.

Post some pics when you get a chance!

Thank you for taking the time to leave me a detailed set of recommendations man. I knew there were some fellow 800D owners on here. It's such a popular case :D

Here's what I think I'm going to do, per your recommendation:

Going to go with a double thick 360 rad (something high end, as I don't want to skimp with the water cooling)

I've already found the gentle typhoon 1850/3000rpm fans that I was looking for on a lesser known site. I'm definitely going to go with one of those. I am going to go full push-pull on the whole thing up top, even if I have to mount the top 3 outside of the case. I'll have to check the dimensions on the rads and then compare to the case.

I decided to go with a heatkiller cpu block. I'm just weary of EK right now after the whole nickel fiasco. I'd rather pay the premium and get something I know is not going to have any issues.

I've always heard great things about aquacomputer. I'll check out their 6950/6970 blocks for sure.

I'm definitely going to go with a res that I can show off. Tube style most likely even though it's so common. I just like the look. That will be easy once I decide everything else and where I'm going to mount it. There's so much room in my setup right now I can go with almost anything.

Going to research the pumps more. I'll check out the ones you listed.

Probably going with Tygon tubing. Solid white, and definitely going big. I don't like the look of measly little tubes in a huge case. I want this to stand out.

I'll probably also go with bitspower for the fittings just because. I'd rather spend the extra money and have fittings that look good and function just as well.

I'm definitely going to start drawing the layout and measuring the different components I'm pricing out. This might take a few days before I completely decide. I'm going to start a work log once I've decided and purchase the parts.

This should be really fun.

Will do man. I'm adding you, and will probably PM you for advice on some of the components. I'm going to start shopping after work hours today.

Super excited man! It's about time I take advantage of this case.

The Aquagrafx block for sure.

Hi

I second that, as the aqua block has built in stand off's and will be easier to fit, however I would suggest you do search online for other users who have this block fitted; before investing in it. (make sure your PCB is a reference design)

I already checked to make sure it was a reference block. I generally only buy reference model cards. Just a weird peeve of mine. I don't trust non reference stuff.

That block should work perfectly for me.

I'm going through the list one component at a time and making sure it's exactly what I need and want, functionally and visually. Then I'm price shopping. I haven't ordered the vga block yet, but it's on my confirmed 100% list. I have a list of parts that are "maybe" that need more research, and once I come to a conclusion on a component I move it to the 100% buy list. Once I've got everything I know will be compatible I will order all at once.

Hi

as you will notice from my system spec's I am currently using an O-800D; just a quick note from my experience of this case, their is little room for error; the lower chamber is not large enough for a 655 pump, without modification to the case or you have to mount it above next to the raid box. I found running a CPU and GPU on the same loop impossible to control temps so had to split the loop and go duel, Swifttech kit external to CPU and Dangerden pump internal to GPU at the bottom of the case.

I notice from your system spec's that you already own an H70; if this is the case you would be best off adding a triple rad to the top of the O-800D and using a DD pump at the bottom of the case with a T line attached for the GPU only. you will have the best of both worlds

Out of the question:

I'm putting the H70 in my wife's new AMD build. I wouldn't say there is no room for error in the 800D. I'm also picking parts I absolutely know fit in the case without mods. Luckily there are tons of examples on the internet of people who have WC'd the 800D - it's made for it.

I'm going to research each part until I know 100% it will work with minimal modding.

Hi

one tripple rad will not do what you want it to do, without extreamly high speed fans as you will find on Koolance rads (they are v-loud) and you will need fans such as these to keep a CPU and GPU under control on a single loop.

as for their being plenty of room in the O-800D and built for it; it was built by corsair for there own cooling solutions, you may be mistaken and I am not sure; untill you come to assemble your build that you will fully appreaciate how little room there is.

I wish you all the best and I hope everything works out for you

Actually one thick triple rad with 6 high static pressure fans would work just fine for my cpu + gpu. I've been talking to a guy who has almost an identical setup on youtube, and he gets much better temps than I do with a single 360. If one 120mm rad on an H70 is plenty for a i7 OC'd at 4.2Ghz with HT, then I think a triple rad will do fine. Not to mention I'm probably going to end up putting a second 120mm rad on the back. There's also a chance I will knock out the bottom HD cage and put a 240mm rad down there. It's a pretty simple mod afaik so it's definitely an option right now.

I will almost certainly be going with a 360+120mm rad, but even if I went with a single high performance 360 I know I would have better overall temps than with my H70 / reference air cooler.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi

You will attain much better temps with the 360+120 rad over and above an H70, I must admit that taking the bottom HDD cage out did cross my mind; up until the point that the tripple rad I was using did not fit and I could have used that space to fit the second pump in my system (may be next time I) .

Go for it sounds good

I saw your temps before you deleted them. What is your cpu load temp with a stress test just out of curiosity?

To comment on your previous post. The 800D wasn't just made for their own water cooling solutions. It was very obviously built for custom water cooling man. Why do you think so many people use it for their custom water builds?

The only corsair water cooling solution that was out when the 800D came out was what? The H50?

Then the H70?

Both are 120mm rads and don't have custom tubing, etc. Why would they have all the spots for rads, grommets for tubing? etc?

I've been measuring it today and I can already see there is plenty of room for what I'm going to install.

Thanks for recording the temps. I'm looking to get even better than that so I'm definitely going to go with the most powerful I can fit in this case. I might go with a double loop if necessary.

I'm thinking I might go with dual xspc 5.25" res's and 2 x Swiftech MCP350 12 VDC Pump.

I need to take advantage of the 4 open 5.25" bays for sure. This is only if I decide on going dual loop though.

This is definitely going to help with ideas: http://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81698

Hi

Corsair some time ago announced two new models in its award-winning Hydro Series family of high-performance liquid CPU coolers. The Hydro Series H80 and H100 feature the latest cooling performance technology, simple installation, and maintenance-free operation. I am sure they will cover the tripple rad solution soon ( they have to sell and innovate all the time)

"Why would they have all the spots for rads, grommets for tubing" good question! they are all in the wrong places and where designed badly at the last minute.
the reason people are using these for H2o is simple, they are a cost effective and large case; but not the best for H2o

I have all faith in you at breaking the heat with or without a dual loop, I hope you post some pic's when you do.

nb: the only thing I can do now to improve my temps is to purchase a quad rad or above, but I am into gaming and know games around to day or in the near future will require 100% loads from a cpu.

just coming up to 9 O'Clock here; I am off to play, don't forget post some results once you have your rig up to spec

I get what you're saying. I originally hadn't planned on doing full water necessarily, but I knew the case could easily do it. The last time I did water cooling was over 5 years ago, and it was in a smaller and much more difficult case.

I just need to keep researching each part to find out what will work best for me.

What 120mm fans have the best static pressure for dense radiators? I'm really not worried about loudness.

I'm looking at:

My favorite due to specs and price: Yate Loon 120x25mm D12SH-12 High Speed - Black (88 CFM, 40 dBA) but do these have good static pressure for radiators? I've been told yate loons are amazing...

Scythe Gentle Typhoon 120 mm Silent Case Fan - 57 CFM, 1850 RPM

Delta FFB1212VHE 120x38mm Very High Speed - 151cfm??

Hi

If you are not worried about noise; getting a fan shroud may be difficult for the push / pull

Delta 120 x 38mm Super Extreme High-Speed Fan - 240.96 CFM (AFB1212GHE)

Brand: Delta

The Delta 120 x 38mm Super Extreme High-Speed Fan is an outrageously high performance fan that moves over 240 cubic feet of air every minute. It also has an amazing near 4:1 airflow to noise ratio. This fan is a great choice for cooling components that heat up to temperatures similar to that of the sun's core.

I saw these on sidewinder and I thought "these are awesome". I just watched a quick video review of these. While I don't mind noise, I think these are just on a whole different level. The sound is pretty crazy. I guess I could run them at 25% speed, but I might as well just buy some slower delta's. I think even the "slow" ones would be very productive.

I would be very shocked if anyone uses these in a 24/7 computing environment. These are great for like 3u servers and DC/NOC operations, but in a n office or home these are insane at 100%

Dual 350s are nice, could upgrade to dual D5's, thats what I went with but didn't have the res/bay that looks so pimp.

I used that exact thread to pull my bottom drives out as well. Very detailed.

I keep meaning to make a video on how I put in a 120.4 in the top, it's such a simple mod that really helps maximize the potential of the Obsidian.

Maybe I'll throw up some rough shots for ya, I've got pics but a video will just make this so much easier.
