Recommend me a good/cheap hard drive for RAID

i been reading alot and most site states that i need enterprise type hard drive if i wanna have reliable raid, i look around ther pretty expensive so please help finding a good/cheap HD

right now i got all my important data/files in a usb external hard drive, i wanna move it to a file server with raid 1

And the server drives are specifically designed for servers and backup storage which have many different monitoring
features and such. Plus they are hot swappable.

for starters prolly around 500gb to 1tb, currently i got around 300gb worth of data/files

So...You want one of the expensive drives used for servers or could you manage with an everyday drive?

I can reccomend WD AV hard drives, their designed for surveillance recording...

To be honest for backup purposes your better off with your external drive, the less time it spends spinning the longer it will last, now if you need a storage drive to house 1000's of videos that you access regularly raid would be the way to go.

basically i want a everyday HD, someone mentioned in my other thread about WD disabling ther TLER "time-limited error recovery" feature in ther consumer HD which eventually make raid array useless, my main question is other hd maker have same technology enable in ther low end HD

well i would like to able to access my data online, occasionally i need it for work and that lil hard to do with external HD. I read about window home server which i think gonna be ideal for me that why im hoping i can hardware raid it

If your not on a super tight budget the WD enterprise drives would be my choice just make sure you get a good compatible raid controller.

To me HDD's are like PSU's id rather fork out the extra cash for the piece of mind that i know im not going to have issues + WD go's above and beyond if you do need to warranty something.
Not only do they have 5 years but in the unlikely event something does go wrong they make it right and then some.

For example my old 3.5in raptor 150gb stopped functioning in AHCI mode after 4 years of 24/7/365 use, i RMA'ed it to WD i got a brand new VelocialRaptor 150gb which is the newest model back in a week and a half no questions asked no proof of purchase or headaches.

Not to sound like a WD fan boy Samsung makes good drives too just avoid hitachi and Seagate like the plague

actually got em now in my gaming rig, problem is TLER "time-limited error recovery" is disabled

never heard of it either till some mentioned it when i was trying to clone my old raid set up, google it

I wouldn't recommend ever cloning a RAID 0 set up. Errors occurring seems to be unavoidable.

I used to run some "enterprise class" drives (Hitachi Ultrastars) in one of my RAID arrays. I switched to regular drives because there's little or no performance difference, and the difference in reliability doesn't matter to me when I'm already using RAID for data redundancy. I personally now go with whatever's cheapest per gigabyte. All drives are going to fail eventually.

Pick yourself up some Seagate LP drives. They are plenty fast, don't consume much power, and run nice and cool, which is great for an always online server configuration. I've got 2 of these 1.5TB drives running in RAID right now, have been running like that for about 6 months now and haven't had a single hick-up. I'd recommend the 1TB version...but its the same $70 price, so just go with the 1.5TB.

^^ Another vote for the ST31500541AS drives for the same reasons noted. I'm currently running several in a RAID 5 array and no problems here either. The reviews for them are a bit scary but I have yet to have a problem.
