easy to vmod :D and the cooling it comes with should be excellent too, also the power setup on the far right of the card in your picture is also non reference (well it dont look like my XFX 8800GT alpha dog...), so maybe the vmod is different, but maybe they've made it 3-phase too, which'll mean better over clocking for you.

Mate I was given a bung version.

It overheats like no other card I've had!

I am certain it's the heat of the card causing the lockups as there are times in Colin Mcrae DiRT.
When the corruption happens I press pause after a few seconds it goes away.
If I carry on playing it will do it again.

At that time I pause and wait for the corruption to disappear, I minimize to windows to check Riva Tuner to find the card at 95degC during the time of the corruption.

Put it this way, just from surfing the net my GPU temps goes from 54deg to 60degC.

Poorly installed heatsink I think.:shadedshu

I know there are a couple of ways I can go about this fixing.

RMA or reseat the heatsink with a new spplication of thermal paste.

I have underclocked only the core to 600Mhz from 670Mhz and it reduces the heat with no crashes.
Still on the hot side though.
Memory is fine as I have left it a stock when testing.

I seemed to have stopped my card from locking up.

Yes I seem to have stopped the card from locking up.

BUT. . . .
I had to drop the core clock to 600Mhz.:banghead:

Now this is what doesn't make sense.
The temperature can now go higher without locking up.

So now the question is.
Why is the core locking up at 670Mhz at 95degC when the core doesn't lock up at 600Mhz at 97degC?:wtf:

Could it possibly be the core cannot be stable at 670Mhz at 95degC?

Well, stability can depend on a number of factors, and this discepancy can occur. However you most definately should not be running any part o your pc at 90C+. Ever. Dropping the core clock is probably not going to fix this. I don't know about xfx's warranty, but I would suggest you attempt to reseat the heatsink and/or rma it. If you can get those temps down to about 60C you will be ok, and most likely will be able to go much higher on your clock.

Dropping the core clock did not fix the temperature at all but it did stoip the game from texture corruption and lockup.
The temperature just keeps on going up and up and the air coming out of the PC feels only warm unlike my X1950pro which you could feel hot air coming out.

Here's a screenshot of the 8800GT hitting 105degC

I'll be sending it back to the seller who I have a two year warranty with.
I don't know if reseating the heatsink will void my warranty.
I noticed the card had issues with DiRT especially in the replays so I ran the card through a replay four times.
Each time the through the temperature kept rising a bit at a time.

I love my eVGA 8800GT KO edition ($270 bucks now) It runs at a nice 750/990/1800CMS on stock cooling from 675/975/1688CMS. I bough the Aftermarket AKIMBO dual slot cooler for the 8800 Series from eVGA, and reports are its between 10 and 12c cooler than stock cooling. But the eVGA stuff is amazing there gfx cards are totally worth their weight. My Aftermarket cooler should be here withing a day or two.

If you want you can get a 8800GT AKIMBO edition straight from the start and it runs 720/1000/Shader? CMS.

My 8800GT will outperform a 9600 series card without a problem. The thing about 8800 series of cards was heat issues, but if you turn the fan up or you get the eVGA bios fix then heat issues seem to go away. I never flashed my gfx bios so i used riva Tuner to turn up the fan and the clock speeds etic, and it works like a charm. Got me 15,100 3dMark06 points.

Thats my two cents.

That is way to hot for my taste, my eVGA runs at idle in the mid 40c, and WOT is around 65ish. The after market cooler should fix these temps so i can clock even higher. I do know that many people have had there gt running in the mid 90c WOT when they didn't turn up the fan settings in bios or riva tuner.

Did you up the fan speed Widjaja?

Can't up the fan speed.
Tried with RivaTuner but can't hear any change in noise from the fan or change in temperature.

The temps of this card are way too hot for what type of cooling it has and what cooling my case has.

I would have expected the temps to be in the 80's max but this card just keeps on heating up regardless of side panel off, or adding a 120mm case fan to the side panel right beside the card.

Yea I do not believe you can change the fan speed with the aftermarket coolers, at least some of them. They are supposed to have an automatically programed duty cycle. You really shouldn't even be running a card in the 80s. Even if your performace doesn't noticably suffer, you are severly shortening the life of the card at those temps. Shouldn't really go above 70C. With that cooler and decent airflow in your case (you will probably want to get a pci slot cooler, as these coolers spit out tons of hot air in your case) you shouldn't go much higher than 50C I wouldn't think. The main thing you should have to worry about is getting that air out of your case.

The thing is I'm not feeling any hot air in the case.
I could feel my X1950pro produce way more heat and the heatsink was much hotter to touch.

That sounds like a good indicator your hs isn't doing its job. Massive gpu overheating+no air in case= messed up cooler. Might just not be seated properly.

The warranty I have on this hot GPU is pretty good.
I have a warranty with XFX and a two year warranty with the certified seller.
The seller only supplies XFX.

I've been posting this situation at the 8K 9K series clubhouse too.
TK says RMA and or reseat the HS.
I would attempt to reseat the HS if I had ceramic compound.
My hands are to shaky to use AS5 and I would probably somehow get it on the caps around the die.

@farlex85
Wouldn't you think the X1950pro would over heat way easier if this one overheats so badly since the 8800GT has whats supposed to be a much more efficient cooler?

Come to think of it. in my case the X1950pro reached the exact temperature it is supposed to reach so I know I don't have bad cooling..

I also noticed in Riva tuner the fan duty cycle raises once it goes past 95degC.
A bit late if it is already locking up at 95 at stock xXx clocks.

I'm not talking about bad case cooling, I'm talking about the hs on the gpu. Your 1950pro hs was probably properly seated, thus expelling more air into your case, and keeping your gpu cool. The hs on your 8800gt needs to be reseated. It is a better cooler, but if it is not properly seated, it won't do much, hence the high gpu temps and no hot air coming out.

I would say try to reseat it, however this could possibly void your warrant, so check that out first. If it doesn't, then do that. The problem is with your gpu hs, not your case cooling.

Also with many aftermarket gpu coolers, duty cycles and such through rivatuner don't really do anything. The manufacturer sets the duty cycles beforehand, and it is out of your control. This is not always the case though.

And also you can pick up some mx-2. It is non-conductive so you don't run the risk of killing your card if you get it on another part on accident.

I'de replace the hsf, or at least reseat it, It sounds like a seating issue. If not RMA the card before something really bad happens.

Try lowering the memory, that is where the heat might be coming from, if lowering the clock speed didn't drop temps the memory drop should. then you could pinpoint where the heat issues are coming, or where the hsf isn't seated right.

the ECS 8800GT I run (passive cooled version) runs in the low to mid 40C range. Consider the Accelero cooler on whatever card you chose.

I use Riva Tuner but I tried out CPUID and have the same results in temperature.
Wolf is right and I will just RMA it.

As I said, it doesn't make any sense my X1950pro with the useless reference cooler does not over heat in my rig yet the 8800GT with the Zalman cooler does.

Problem sloved sort of

The fan is stuck at 29% duty cycle regardless of the temperature.
So in theory if I connect the fan to a system fan connection it should run at full speed.

Result should be. . . .adequate cooling.

But still I shouldn't have to go to any lengths to get the card cool at stock clocks in the first place.

Botched GPU BIOS is to blame on this one.

I have sent a ticket to XFX support to see what kind of reply I get.

I'll be RMAing the card anyway since it has already reached such high temperatures.
