What is the recommended gaming resolution supposed to refer to?
I ask because I always play games several notches above where this site recommends and this makes me wonder if
I am using my Graphics Card wrong.
In-case it matters my card is the NVIDIA GeForce GT 610, and I set it to 1920x1080.

The recommended resolution is always the one native to your monitor. If your monitor is 1920x1080, that will always be the recommended resolution. Since you will then render a image that is exactly the same resolution as your monitor and no form of scaling is required.

Recommended resolution could also refer to what they suggest is the highest resolution one could comfortable play a game with using X graphics card. Since older or lower end cards might struggle to perform in more intense games and a lower resolution would definetly help performance.

This is correct.

This is why the Display settings control panel in Windows 10 will list a number of resolutions and the recommended one will be the monitor's native resolution.

PC gamers need to be thoughtful in matching a graphics card with a monitor.

I think they are referring to the GPU database recommended resolutions, where they are marked various colors, green, yellow, orange, red based on how well they generally can handle that resolution

it's the recommend resolution that card can handle. typically going above that recommendation means you will get less / low frame rates, sometimes to the point of it being unplayable due to how unejoyable it is to play a game that looks like it is running like a 20FPS stop motion film from the last century

So if you have that card and use 1920x1080 when you game, the game must not be very demanding processing wise and therefore runs decent or your expectations are low since the frame rate could be pretty low with resolution set that high

Well, in that sense, it's no different than any other PC component. They all have their sweet spot in terms of performance. Higher resolutions at faster framerates will require more capable hardware.

Ultimately it will come down to what the OP considers acceptable. After all, it's their eyes on their monitor not ours.

I forgot that was even a thing on TPU, i don't visit the GPU database all that often.
But that does indeed seem to be the case, how that is determined however I do not know.
Taking a look at the 980ti which I know was popularly used for 4k gaming for it's time, it is now listed as unplayable. Which I mean, depends? my old 980ti definitely handled gaming at 4k just fine, even if on its later days i had to turn down the settings in newer games to reach an acceptable framerate for my own preference.

I believe that the Recommended Gaming Resolution rating here on TPU reflects the card's ability to run current games maxed out with playable frame rates. Of course the 980 Ti is still a capable card, and it will run many older titles at 4K smoothly. But even the mightiest GPUs of today struggle to maintain 60 fps in the most demanding games. The 980 Ti is comparable with the 1660, so it's hard to recommend it for 4K:

i have two decent 1080p monitors, a LG GL850B and Odyssey G7 (High End 1440p) and a 4K 144hz ROG Strix XG27UQR.

when i lean back and just play a random FPS or Racing Game. it is hard to see the actual difference between 1080p and 4K except when you lean towards the monitor and look for the extremely sharp details and small things.

if you just casually play games go with a decent 1080p Monitor. you'll save a LOT of money when you can run a 5 year old card with no issues compared to a 3070 upwards.

Well with GT 610 you ain't going to be able to play to many new games and even older game going to struggle with that GPU....720p(1280x720p) is your best bet if you expecting to have 30+Fps in some older titles when it comes to the 1080p you could maybe play some older games or maybe some well optimized and not graphically intense games.....
