Recommended PSU for this rig

I'm currently upgrading my desktop and I'm going to be using:
i7 920 CPU
Asus S1366 Intel X58 ATX A L Mobo
12 GB DDR3 (6 x 2GB)
1 x IDE DVD-RW
2 X SATA HDD
1 X Geforce 512MB Graphics Card

At the moment the PSU is only 450W,so I'm guessing I'll need a new PSU for this rig but what would be the recommend wattage?

Thanks in advance,
Matt

1 Geforce 512MB Graphics card?

It depends on whether you are overclocking your rig or not. If not, a 400-500w PSU would be enough, depending on what the "Geforce 512MB" card is. If you are overclocking, get something along the 500-600w range.

i agree with fourstaff. What Geforce card is it exactly. just to allow for some headroom and be on the safe side. I'd get a 650W PSU. Corsair/Silverstone/Thermaltake are some of the better manufacturers. There are tons more, but those are just a handful.

EDIT: Saw you said it was a 9400GT. Even a 500W would be good enough. However, if in the future you decide to get a more powerful card, I think you'd be better off just getting something like a 650W PSU for now. Shouldn't be much more.

+1 on CP, a 500-600w is plenty, assuming that you upgrade that "graphics card" of yours. Yes, its an insult, because your rig currently looks like a muscle car with 1 inch tyres. Unless of course you don't use graphics intensive applications, in which case I am sorry about laughing at your mismatched build.

Edit: if you are sticking with your current build, your current psu is fine but it depends on the brand of the PSU. If its a good psu it will power your rig just fine. If its a "no name" psu, UPGRADE!!

your current PSU is plenty for that build (a I7 920/12gig RAM matched up to a 512mb 9400gt, BLASPHEMY)

If it's a good 450w (Corsair), you'll be fine, otherwise a TruePower New 550w or TruePower New 650w would be a great upgrade

I do plan to upgrade my graphics card soon.

Right, a short guide:
To power a barebones i7 rig (bare minimum, no gfx card and so on): ~250w
OC? add 150w
graphics card?
Low-mid end ~50-150w
High end ~200-300w
increase when you need more

so, for a non overclocked i7 rig with 5850 crossfire, you will need 250w + 2x200w, making it about 650w

550W should be more than enough.

Preferably a Corsair or Antec.

If you planning to upgrade your graphics card and go SLI/Crossfire get a 750W.

Upgrade the PSU before the GPU to stay safe. 550-600W unless you've got SLI/CF in your future.

Not sure where some people are pulling numbers from. My i7 rig, according to my P3 at the wall and confirmed against my UPS monitoring software, tops out at 485w with 8 threads running @ 100% and the crossfire maxing usage in furmark.

Go with a known brand 700W just to be on the safe. Corsair, Enermax,Silverstone, Seasonic, SOME Antec, SOME Kingwin, SOME Abs/Tagan. Give a budget and I'd be glad to post a few.

@Flak

Always best to overshoot on a PSU's ratings than undershoot. If it's overkill, it won't hurt anything.

@flak.
It's good to always have headroom dude. Not all PSU's actually put out what they are rated for so I think a 650W will be perfect.

My post was just meant for clarification, since it seems PSU threads have been popular this week and I've seen some crazy numbers being given for power usage. So I added my post of actual power usage from an i7 system under full load. Though regardless, you're right CP, 650w is a good number to shoot for.

Trust me we appreciate that, actual numbers are even better. I am really interested in knowing my actual numbers as well.

well it also comes down to capacitor aging in a psu as well what it can output today may not be what it can handle 6 months from now.

i agree large numbers are 1 thing but its well known you should have more then you need simply do to strain on the psu it will run cooler have better stability on the rails and is generally safer to have headroom to work with. as enthusiasts we all know this.

i look at it like driving a car with the gas tank on E sure u might make to the quick -e- mart to get your smokes and then get home but where are u gonna go from there u might get lucky u might not
