Anyone playing Reflex Arena (Quake 3 Arena inspired shooter)? It's a more cartoonish and colorful version of Quake 3 Arena and goes for like 10€ on Steam so it's really super cheap.

And while it's fun to play because aiming and motion is just ridiculously smooth and precise (it has amazing FOV and mouse settings and even allows you to configure HUD placement), I'm spending most of the time in map editor which is just the most epic thing ever. It's like playing Minecraft, but you can also rotate cubes, stretch them, create triangles, angled cubes and blocks, add lighting, effects, objects, place jump pads, place portals etc :D If you're creative at heart, this will be your new home :)

I've decided to port most of the legendary maps from Unreal Tournament, but with a twist. They are never 1:1 copy and since Reflex Arena doesn't have low gravity and other fiddly stuff I have to improvise, they are made from memory, so they are just inspiration. But it's working pretty nicely despite that. Just finished "Morpheus Towers" map today (Morpheus, three insanely tall skyscrapers reaching low orbit, no low gravity though :D ) and now I've started working on legendary CTF map "Facing Worlds". A blend of original and the one in UT2004 with Egyptian theme. It looks so majestic :D

Man, so many maps to port :D

I'll post some more images of the maps later in the evening, maybe even some videos :)

CTF Facing Worlds

A remake of UT99/UT2004 legendary CTF Facing Worlds map for Reflex Arena. Freshly released as Release Candidate 3 :)

The movement and gameplay in Reflex is more or less like Quake 3 CPM (quake 3 mod CNQ3) which is a good thing! :D I'm afraid that Quake Champions will take some of the flare out of reflex tho...

Some Quake 3 CPM gameplay (similar level can be achieved in Reflex):

The thing is, Quake is an established franchise and Bethesda has shitload of money to throw at advertisement. Reflex Arena is made by bunch of Aussies and the game costs 10€. It's a bit unfortunate because it's a really fun game with superb netcode (compared to garbage CS:GO) and the infinite creativity with drag and drop map editor which allows you to create spectacular maps in few hours with next to zero mapping knowledge. And there is also no blood since these are robots so it's Germany/Australia friendly XD

I've bought the game a long time ago and played it a couple of times, too bad I don't have enough time to dedicate myself to quake and similar arena shooters anymore :/

Anyone recognizes this? :D

Deck16_Build.jpg

Yup, Deck 16 is work in progress :D Structurally, it's 80% complete. Got just 2 rooms to finish up and then it's fine detailing and weapons placement.

Just realized Reflex Arena already contains this map :D Not sure if official or fan made, but I recognized it instantly. The shape, colors are a bit brighter in Reflex Arena :D People mostly ported the Quake maps. No one did the Unreal Tournament maps. But that's why I'm here :)

There are more Quake maps in Reflex, mostly CPM maps! That map you see on the video is around since quake 1, I believe 1997. It is called Aerowalk. People still play it in official matches to this day, the map made it's way to every quake iteration and even spread through other games! Some of the most iconic quakecon pro tournament finals matches in quake 3/quake live history occurred in this map! :D

While I played Quake 3 Arena a lot, I was never really huge fan of their maps. Which explains why I'm mostly porting UT99 maps. The thing is, UT99's maps always have a back story. Either they are a skyscraper, a space ship hangar, monastery on top of a mountain, reactor core, Mars space station, space ship in hyperspace etc. Maps in Quake 3 Arena were just some maps with zero theme or feel of something greater. Sure, it works, it's a map, but it's just that...

Btw, one more Deck 16 teaser :D I'm getting somewhere. Playing with lighting and dynamic shadows, giving it a bit more dramatic feel. Those fans above in the ventilation room cast really cool shadows.

Couldn't agree with ya more man! As you stated, at least UT99 had some themes and "back story" to them! :rockout:

Great job on Deck 16!!! Most of the fun and iconic Quake maps came from the community! ;)

Haven't finished Deck 16 yet and I'm already thinking which one to port next :) Lava Giant and Coret were one of my favorite CTF maps. Especially Coret which came with UT99 demo and I played the hell out of it with bots. It's also interesting to work with CTF maps if they are symmetrical. You basically make half of the map, mirror it and rotate it to align back with the self. Then you just assign team sides and adjust portals to point to the correct target. Asymmetrical CTF maps are a bit more tricky. If it's same layout and just details, it's simple. You still mirror it and make slight changes to each side. Fully asymmetrical are the ones where I'll spend a lot of time. :p

I'm also thinking of doing maps from other games that were not arena based. The Natural Selection 2 Biodome or System Shock 2 MedSci sector's were nice and are viable option to port I think. Daikatana also had some nice levels in ancient Norway. So many options :D

Deck 16

Full remaster of legendary UT99 level Deck 16. It's far from just a map port because it's made entirely from scratch with tons of details, extra elements and changed map architecture. Around 3 days of non stop work, but I absolutely love the results :)

Got an idea to port de_dust2 and cs_office from CS:GO :) That should be fun since these are probably one of most well known and played maps in general.

UT99 Coret, UT99 Peak and UT99 Hyperblast are also on my todo list, not sure in which order I'll make them.

Remember DM-Peak aka "The Peak Monastery" from UT99 ? Here is a sneak peek of redesigned map.

Expecting to finish it tomorrow. Some more decorations and stuff, but it's almost done. I've decided to go with clean and vibrant Japanese style instead of cold and dark gothic style from original.
