Refrigerator shuts off my keyboard. What?

This is a bit of an odd question/topic but here we go! Currently my desktop sits about 10 inches away from the side of a mini fridge. Whenever the fridge shuts off (the compressor that is) it causes my speakers to pop and now, my keyboard to disconnect. The disconnect only happens for a couple of seconds and then the keyboard reconnects automatically. My computer even makes the noise like I unplugged it.

I am assuming this is some sort of static discharge from the fridge? If that is the case, is this bad news or am I OK to leave my setup how it is?

Try to plug your PC in another wall socket.

Assuming that you paid attention in grade school and actually know what static discharge is, Id say its definitely not that.

Its most likely some sort of electromagnetic interference caused by compressor of the fridge so either move the fridge or move your PC or get sheets of copper (kind of like aluminum or 'tin' foil' and start wrapping your fridge or your PC/keyboard to prevent disruption from electromagnetic interference

Sounds like the fridge is causing a spike in the power on that circuit.

Move to another circuit or try a good ups with power conditioning or a good power conditioner.

I am gonna go with the idea of plugging the fridge into something else. The cluster I have currently looks dangerous to say the least and now that I am having this issue, probably wouldn't be a bad idea for me to change it.

It's not static. It could either be electromagnetic interference (EMI) due to proximity or electrical (e.g. the circuit handles the change in current poorly).

Aluminium foil can shield EMI and changing circuits can troubleshoot electrical.

Place a power surge protection between your wall socket and PC. That should filter it out.

Sounds like a cheap internals on the mini fridge.

It might be a cheap compressor, but it could also be a dirty circuit design. If they have used a poorly designed DC switching system for the motor you could find the relays are arcing. The more expensive model was probably more expensive because it used solid state switching or fet controlled relays.

I'd move the fridge to the other side of the desk and see if it stops.

my old housemate would have his PC BSOD whenever his fridge compressor turned off, but only if he had an xbox 360 controller plugged into his front USB ports.

its a weird power surge issue, i dont think he ever fixed it (he got a cordless controller iirc)

It's a current spike, get a line conditioner, surge protector(if you are not already plugged into one) or get a better quality psu and hope it's beefy enough to shrug it off. Plugging the fridge into another outlet (cheapest option) will only work if you can get it on another circuit.
