I'm looking at getting another SSD and I see some that are manufacturer refurbished on eBay. Is getting a refurb SSD a good idea?

I don't trust refrub stuff on Ebay. But I do trust stuff from sites like Newgg and NCIX.

Thanks for the feedback. This is the one I'm looking at right now. http://www.ebay.com/itm/182396617155
Not bad, but I'd still ask for SMART.
Sandisk Ultra II is good (I'm still using one in my rig), but there have been reports of cheap knockoffs (as with Kingston SSDNow).

If you are in US, I'd rather throw in another $30-$35 for a brand new SanDisk X400. It is a little bit faster than Ultra II (looks almost the same on paper, but totally different in reality), plus a 3 year manufacturer warranty.
Extra 32GB is also a nice bonus ))
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2W03S69759

I have both 240GB Ultra II and 512GB X400, and so far both drives matched or exceeded my expectations. Ultra II already served me more than 3 years() and is still at 100% health (10TB Writes, 34TB NAND writes, over 10k power on hours).

^^ What he said. It could have a helluva lot of writes which would significantly shorten its life.

Also, be sure that it's a reputable seller with a decent warranty.

Thanks. I'll keep my eye out some more and see what the New Years deals have to offer.

How do you 'refurb' an ssd??

seriously, , , ,

Lots of ways. But I'm sure the generic process is:

1.) Find the component on the PCB that failed. (This could be something serious like a controller or NAND chip, or something simple like a capacitor or resistor.)
2.) De-Solder old component.
3.) Solder in new working component in place of the old component.
4.) In the case of a Controller failure or NAND replacement, reprogram the controller for the new configuration.
5.) Scrub any old data left on the drive from the original owner.

Firmware update failure, minor controller failure (fixable by reset or reflashing), and/or user error/stupidity are all subjected to "refurbishment".
In most cases it does not even go as far as soldering (at least for storage devices).

$105 refurb and $128 brand new....... There really is no question here....... SSD's are great and really the cats ass no doubt, but we also know the more they have been used the slower they get........$23 savings is NOT worth it in my opinion.

EBAY Quote on this item: "
Warranty:

This product comes with 30 days warranty from the seller, yes-embiz.

We will either send replacement item or fully refund your money if the item does not work for you.

Returned item must have the same serial number as it was sent out.

There is no warranty from the manufacturer."

A factory warranty I believe is 3 years.

They were RMA returns to the manufacture. Then sold off in bulk to a vender. The sold as refurb. Maybe the partition was deleted but that's about it
