its not crap, you just don't know how to setup it up correctly.

you need to know your internet IP address.
forward the RDP port on your router to the PC you want to RDP too.
enable the firewall on the PC to allow RDP.

it is that simple, as long as you know what you are doing with port forwarding and firewalls. I have this setup for so many of my families PC's just because its easier to help them out if they have screwed something up.

setup of port forwards requires you to actually be present to do it. otherwise the people there would be smart enough to not need your help.

It also requires that they nto change any hardware or reinstall windows, lest the IP's change and the port forwards become redundant.

You still need to install Hamachi. Solutions like Techinline are the best for single time support to n00bs. They only need to go to a website and click accept a few times. For performance and (Windows) server management and the likes RDP is my preferred solution.

Besides, why wouldn't you be unable change any hardware when using RDP and portforwarding?

if they change network cards, routers, etc the IP address would change and the forward would go elsewhere.

That's hardly "any hardware". Besides, the families you speak of don't replace their network card or router without you doing it for them.

you got my point backwards. this ONLY works for family, or situations where you can go on-site, and you're in charge of hardware and software maintenance.

My point was in places where people change things without your consent, or you dont have local access - you're screwed for setting up port forwards.

No, you said people doing port forwarding are smart enough not to need your help. Those same people are the ones that replace their own router, thus don't need your help.

Otherwise you're right, port forwarding is not a solution for random people you're helping. In that case I have to stick to my point > web based remote control application.

Though even better is not helping them in the first place :)

Is any one familiar with this option on XP-32? I'm setting up a comp for my dad, who is an hour away. From what I can tell I should be able to log onto his comp from my house to help him with any probs he may have. But how do we set it up? Could some one please help me out with this or offer a link that would help? We both will be using a cable connection to reach the internet.

Thanks in advance.

I think you'll find Crossloop to be a much simpler solution for occasional remote control of your father's PC. It's a freebie. www.crossloop.com.
