Remove fixed fan cable from Corsair h80i GT pump

Want some modding?

I just received this cooler and the idea of having an extra Y-cable in my setup, that I will not use and cannot unplug, makes me wonder if i can remove it.

It is a Y-splitter cable that comes out of the pump, for connecting your cooler fans (not the CPU pump!). I am going to connect my fans to the mobo (I will not install Corsair software at all)

I could just cut it and isolate the terminals but I would rather open the unit and unplug/unsolder it.

Some searches have not been useful. Maybe a TPU'er has done this before?

Thanks!

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
received: as in free gift? if so ,well resell it and take a Nepton 120XL instead, no hassle on the cable removal and no software to install
and worth mentioning ... same price on newegg but way cheaper everywhere else i looked... and quite on par, if not better (well just being "not a Corsair AIO" make it better ...)
i did like that with my free H60 2013, could not be more happy to sell a 120 AIO at a price that was enough to buy a 240 AIO instead ...

thanks but, no thanks, I am keeping it, discussing would be off topic here, in just a few words I like it, besides this pesky cable :)

oh well i understand, i was like that when i got my H60 2013, luckily 2 weeks later some rather annoying issues reminded me to Corsair usual behavior, and instead of keeping the RMA'ed BNIB they did send me well ... you know, the one i sold. (yes i RMA'ed a gift ... and sold the RMA return ... )

i searched a bit about your question and i didn't find anything else, for me it's just asking to "make it fail" willingly something that can already fails by itself (Corsair, "what else" )

but what come to my mind is : unscrew the base, remove the top cover, rip off the cable and : done (or unsolder it to be a bit more cleaner)

third advantage to my method i listed in my previous post : warranty is preserved ;)

If I'm reading this correctly, it isn't one of the "i" series pumps (H80i, etc...). Assuming that's correct, and my experience is the same as yours, there is no software. The standard AIO Corsair coolers just ran everything at 100% all of the time, unless you utilized a PWN connection. If you used PWM, the fans and pump both would throttle. Their software absolutely blows chunks, and it didn't get any better with the i series (plus that usb connector wire was just ugly).

As such, the Y splitter coming from the pump is functionally just a physical jumper from pump control to fan control. It serves no electrical purpose, and can be severed without issue (assuming it is properly capped to prevent grounding).

I ran an H100 this exact way (fans controlled by an outside card, but pump connected to motherboard). The performance, per dollar, wasn't what I was expecting so that particular cooler got the boot. Otherwise though, it ran fine.

just to add info: it is an "i" series and has an USB port, apart from all the above.
If I decided to USE it like Corsair wants me, connect 2 fans to the pump, I suppose fan speed is based on pump speed.... which is fine, unless i want to change the speed in the bios. My mobo X99-S has plenty fan connectors for my goals.

For now I installed it unchanged.
STRANGE! CPU "fan" is unavailable!! It must run because there is no heat, but No Fan in BIOS, Hardware monitors!!!! Is that normal?
(Previous corsair h75 kit did have a working RPM value.)

I installed the H80i the other day and found the standard install (with Corsiar link) OK but a little frustrating as I was not able to influence everything on the display.
So I uninstalled Corsair link and controlled it all via the ASUS fan expert which was OK except for when booting the fans would rev up full speed until the ASUS software took control, however, this noise is quite alarming if you're used to a quiet environment.
My final solution which I'm using now and am content with was to switch off all fan control in the BIOS and ASUS Fan Expert and run all the fans into a Scythe front bay fan controller which I had lying around.
Perfect.
NB: I had to bash a hole in the case door and slap another 120mm fan on it as the reduced air flow in the box caused the G-card to overheat a little.

I am still feeling "WTF????". This mistery "no CPU fan" appears in Corsair forums, but people there seem a bit uninformed, some even say the CPU 3 pin cable is a dummy cable (was long time ago maybe) ;)

Previous cooler h75 informed about RPM to BIOS, Aida64 etc. Newer model h80i GT does not? Come on, can't be!!!

I've just routed my empty cable to the back of the motherboard for my Antec H2O 920. I also have fans hooked directly to motherboard so it's automatically controlled based on CPU temeprature and my custom fan curves. Unless you're really obsessed with the way how case looks inside, it should be good enough. Just route it at the back and attach with zip ties. Problem solved :)

That is ok, but now:

I think Corsair decided to totally HIDE the PUMP regarding RPM values etc. and the 2 FANS they want you to attach to the PUMP must be considered the CPU FAN.
So far I have tested everything, even installed Corsair Link: it reports "Pump speed 2600" "CPU Fan 0000" when I connect the pump as a PWR fan to CPU FAN header on the mobo and the fans elsewhere.

So there is no escape from Corsairs idea here!

EDIT: CONFIRMED what I wrote above. They made a fool proof setup, not one you can adapt. Once everything is setup according to the instructions it is all fine. (Maybe they have had claims for destroyed computers and had to do this...)
CONFIRMED: PWR MODE DOES NOTHING, USE AUTO OR DC!!!!

Corsairs system works.
The only other option is to disable all the fans in the BIOS and run everything through a front bay fan controller, then you have total control and no popups about CPU fan reading 0 or such like.

I just disabled CPU fan monitoring on Rampage II Gene. On Sabertooth X99, I had 3x CPU cooling power headers anyway. One dedicated for pump and 2 for CPU fans. So it's all cool.

Hey, RejZoR, where would you post issues with X99 settings? Any thread in TPU or open one?

Edit : nothing like searching and finding some info. :)
