removing stock heatsink on a 9600

my heatsink is glued on. the holes are around it for a heatsink, but they're empty. From this, i can conclude that visiontek glued it on. how do you remove it?

it's thermal paste/tape. Just rip it off gently..

heat it up with a hair drier. I know that sounds risky, but it is better than ripping off the whole core

yeah, i heard about the hairdryer thing for mobo backplates, but using it for something designed for cooling seemed like it wouldnt work

My 9200SE heatsink was glued on pretty good. It took 2 hours of on and off effort and mnay cuts on my hands before it snapped off. Luckily the core didnt come with it.
A good thing to remove any residue on the chip is "Goof off", or another xylene based cleaner. VERY powerfull stuff so get good ventilation unless you want to lose a few IQ points

i've never heard of Goof off. what about isoproyl alcohol/cotton swabs? or was it really on there (like lets use sandpaper! on there)?

isproyl didnt work for the flue on my 9200SE, but you should try that first. Cotton swabs work well, but for detail cleaning work use qtips.

dont forget to put new thermal paste back on... i recommend arctic silver 5

or you can just use two part epoxy... but that shit will never come off again. I used it on my 9200SE RAM chips, and the heatsinks still got bloody hot.

And no it wasnt 2 part thermal epoxy

is there any good way to actually cool ram? nothing works. heat spreaders/RAMSinks don't seem to do anything, and is there any other choice? :S

arhhh watercooling, i have a friend and i guess it was the watercooling set he had..but it didnt cool it off enough and it burnt up his 9800pro and his proc. i would find a really good one, make sure the pump isnt inside of the water tank and i would buy a few vantec tonadoes to put on the radiator to cool it off


and about the whole hair dryer thing, i dont know if i would trust it...the whole electric motor making all that magnatism.....ehhh keep that as far away as i can from any parts of my computer

i did the whole hair dryer thing earlier today with no probs on my 5900XT. i was going to mount a 3.0GHz P4 cooler on it, but i couldnt get it rigged up maybe do it when i have time and im not so damn tired... GO THE ALL NIGHTER PARTY(S)!!! still havent slept since 10am yesturday and it is currently 3:40pm in melbourne, australia.
