Ok so I do quite a lot of rendering and was wondering about using my GPU for that.
Since I have an AMD card I can't use CUDA for rendering (And OpenCL is so rare it's pathetic), so I was thinking about buying a second hand NVIDIA card that has CUDA (I was looking at a 8800GTS - does it support CUDA?).
If that card does support CUDA, how much faster would it render than my CPU (It's at 3.5GHz).

Another thing I would like to know is, can I render ONLY on GPU (CPU being idle) or does it use both? Also can I put that card along with my 5870 and use it only for CUDA or would I have to use another computer?
If it can't work that way, could I just put it in some old Pentium 4 computer and use it for rendering without using the CPU (since that CPU is crippling slow)?

A lot of questions, I know but if I could get some of them answered I would be grateful :)

8800gts will do CUDA nicely, CPU may be too slow to actually see the benefits

CPU too slow? unlikely (assuming you stick the card with the 1090T).... IMO get something a bit better then a 8800,

you should be able to pick up a GTX260/450 for an extra few dollars.

But what if I stick it with a Pentium 4? Does using CUDA take a lot of CPU resources?

Took the advice to look for a 260, and saw it doesn't cost much more like you said, thank you.
