Hey guys, first of all i'm sorry if this is the wrong section.

Couple of weeks ago i switched case and got alot of new fans which ran quieiter (pretty much silent)

Still getting decent airflow but i have one problem, the loudest thing in my pc is my power supply
i've had it since mid 2011 and the fan is starting to show signs of wear and tear.

I still have warranty on it, but i've read of alot of extremly slow RMA's (3 weeks+)
and i'm really not intrested in being without a power supply for my pc for that long.

So it comes down to replacing the fan as the best solution.

My problem is, only specs i can find is that it's 0.50a and 12VDC.
Picture of it: http://www.hardocp.com/images/articles/1257552006ftj7hk2jLY_3_10_l.jpg

Been thinking of getting a Be Quiet PureWings 2 140mm, 18,8db 61,2cfm.
But since limited info about the fan in question it's hard to know just what will be good enough.

Since the psu fan operates only on voltage control the replacement must start close to the same voltage.
I could hook up a pwm fan and run the cable out of the psu to the motherboard or my fan controllers
which would make it easier.
But i have heared of some PSU's refusing to start when the fan's missing and have no idea if the TX950W does.

To those of you that have replaced psu fans, what did you do? how did it go? and tips and suggestions would be nice.

I'm gonna call the store i bought it at today and see what they think, but if they simply suggest RMA
i will be back at replacing the fan.

And yes, i know any modifications will void the warranty and i know there is risks (there always are when modifying components)

just get any fan you want, and run it from one of the molex plugs on the PSU.

i do this with cheap PSU's all the time, run the fan wiring out with the rest of hte PSU wires, and zip tie it to a molex connector (So that i cant accidentally unplug it)

What i did on my old PSU was to take a fan and cut its molex, strip the wire on the edge and just connect it to the onboard plug on the PSU'S board(while making sure the the two wires dont touch of course).

Unless you have protection on the power supply you can do like Mussels do. But some power supplies refuse to start if the 2 wires of the fan on the board itself are not used on a fan. It's to protect the psu from overheating so it triggers the psu automatically to OFF. I have this protection even on my cheap 5$ power supply. You got to give it a try. The Xilence brand are good fans and yes they really silent enough for a psu and dont require a lot of voltage to start. You can find them on Ebay, Tigerdirect and Newegg.

I'll probably just hook up a fan connector from the fan wires from the psu so if the fan don't work right i can change it easily.

Thanks for all the tips and help everyone!

What i tend to do if i find the fan is actually soldered into the psu's pcb is cut it the cables and splice it with the fan i want to use. Did this with 2 old PSUs but never did this with newer units because warranty

If you are in the US do an Advanced RMA, they send you the new power supply before you have to send the old one back. Corsair does it all the time, I did it with my HX850 when the motherboard fried it. I had my new supply in under a week.

IMO, there is no point in voiding your warranty to replace the fan.

they will do an advanced RMA even if youre not from the U.S, they will need your credit/debit card details just as a precaution though
