Replacement for Canon MG5460 Printer

Hi all,

I’m after a replacement for my old Canon MG5460, which has finally died. Basically my requirements for a replacement printer are as follows:

1) Black & White & Colour printing
2) Only A4 printing is required
3) Must feature a built in scanner
4) Must have USB & Wireless connectivity
5) Reliable
6) Relatively quick printing (The old Canon took FOREVER to produce its first print job & was generally really slow)

I’m quite flexible on pricing but just need whatever printers are suggested to be available somewhere in Australia (I’m in Sydney). The difficulty that I’ve had so far is that the “good” ones I’ve seen recommended aren’t available anywhere here for me. If you make a suggestion, a link would be most welcome.

I welcome any feedback/suggestions.

I use third party refilled cartridges and have no trouble in my HP printers. And, I have the latest updated firmware.

Just select the correct options when installing the cartridges.

While I certainly understand this requirement, it should be noted almost all printers are very slow printing the first page of a print job - at least if the printer has been idle in sleep mode for awhile. Other factors that affect first page print times is whether you have it set to print last page first (as many users prefer) or duplex (both sides) printing. And some ink jets use heat to help extrude the ink through the jets in a more consistent viscosity and some lasers use heat to "set" the toner. So those devices may have to warm up too before the first page spits out.

Plus - at least with ink jets, it takes time for the ink to dry enough so it does not smear when the next sheet is pushed out and slides across it. So some delay time may actually be built into it - all to result in better print quality - a good thing.

My point is, I would not dismiss an otherwise acceptable printing device just because it has a slow first page print time.

It would be good to know if you want an ink jet or a laser.

No they don't. At least not with those on the market today. They may yell at you, but you can then disable the warning as 95Viper notes. I use LDProducts after market ink on my HP and have on many other HPs for years and never had one prevent me from printing because it was aftermarket.

And for the record, those older HPs (and other brands did it too) should have new firmware available so users can disable that blocking feature as the printer makers got into some hot water with Congress and the EU over blocking aftermarket inks.

Theres no such thing for us even after installation of latest firmware

Many thanks for the comprehensive reply to my post. I will take onboard what you have said. I am thinking possibly an inkjet?

The main problem I have had with inkjets is I don't print that often any more. And if you go beyond a certain period without printing, the print heads and jets can dry out - not good. I could not tell you what that period of time is because it depends on too many variables - ink formulas, ambient (room) temperatures, ambient humidity and more. So I try to remember to print out something colorful (to use all the cartridges) at least once a week. This typically is not a problem with lasers.

I will also say this. It is my experience you get what you pay for. If you buy a cheap printer, you get a cheap printer. And the problem there is they just don't seem to last and are not economically feasible to repair. So they basically become disposable items. While I am not a "tree hugger", I don't like cluttering up landfills with stuff that won't decompose in 1000 years.

If I were doing important work (including resumes/CVs for job hunting) or college level papers I would probably go with a good color laser. If doing a lot of graphics (photos) and other papers, I would go with a good inkjet. But that is just me. And don't forget the type and quality of the paper makes a difference too.
