Requirements for Free Games on various platforms.

A discussion was taking place in the Free Games Thread that seems to need a bit more discussion.

In GOG, every time you claim a free game that is part of special promotion, GOG signs you up to their newsletter.

I'm ok with that. Signed up for notifications anyway and the newsletters only drop every few weeks. No big deal. GOG doesn't sell/share personal info so they are the only ones sending you emails. Again, I'm ok with this. Other games marketing companies have different policies..

That's what I do. I have 2 live accounts for catching potential spam and a gmail account for for business purposes and family and friends.

Why bother? Normally that's a good idea. It's GOG though. They already have your email(unless you don't have an account) and it's not like they're going to flood you with emails.

I think what Toothless meant is to sign up for an account using a junk email if it bothers you to get unsolicited emails to your main email account.

I just opt out the emails or mark them as spam and don't see them again

On Epic most of the time I opt out the optional email share but sometimes I forgot and I'm yet to get spammed by anything 'weird'.
On GoG I have the newsletter and whatnot signed, its not much of a bother for me since they don't send much.

All of my game launcher stuff is linked to my main gmail, been like that for years actually and its more or less clean-ish.

I only get emails from the free "ordered" games at epic , no other mails from them...

Few mails per week from gog with discount codes...

It became routine for me to unsub from notifications every time I grab a free game on GoG.

Exept notifications about games on sale, that's what I leave ticked on.

GOG also have their own launcher with telemetry... GOG Galaxy.

It is not required, but modern games are 20-100GB in size, hosted as multiple files, 4GB per file. Pain to download manually, but much easier with GOG Galaxy.

lemme guess, you are trusting them blindly without reading their privacy policy, or attempt to read them. Not all privacy policies are hard to read, GOG makes them easy, so you should at least try before telling others to trust them too. There are caveats.

Depends on what you define as personal info. Since their privacy policy isn't clear on what exactly they share, or whether they make a clear distinction between public and personal information when sharing that info with their "Trusted Partners". "Partners" are still a third party here, trusted or not. And they do at least tell us that they use third party email delivery services, which means they need to share all marketing and communication info with those partners to send you your newsletter subscriptions to make them more targeted and effective. They do not send those newsletters themselves.

Whatever telemetry they collect is minimal. But here's the thing, GOG users DON'T have to use the Galaxy launcher. With everyone else, you do. So your point really isn't one.

me? i do not care what they do with my personal data, i have a few junk email but i always end up using the main email, since the day i redeemed 4 game each on my wrong STEAM/Origin account (yeah i have 2 account of each by mistake ... ) ... (targeted ads and promotions have little impact on me nor they do annoy me... better that than random unrelated things of the sort )

also launcher are usefull anyhow ... Galaxy 2.0 is fun to centralize everything (although need the other launcher to be ... hum launched, to be active )

but i love having my GoG games backup installer on one of my HDD (i just reinstalled Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3D, Empire at wars (with DLC mod) and Starpoint Gemini 3 recently, not that they are heavy to DL anyway)

Think all sign you up for crapmail, epic included which has the most interesting freebies I've seen so I'll give them a little slack
It only tasks a second to miss or uncheck the spam boxes.
Doubt any of this is worse than microsoft.
