Thinking about it, you're much more likely to get a good answer to this problem by visiting the Steam website, looking at the troubleshooting FAQ and the forum. They will be familiar with this problem there.

Oh and turn off your firewall while doing this - but only if you're running a hardware firewall in your broadband router, which most people are nowadays.

i have a netgear router no firewall on that side

All i have running is just my firewall right now ?
still sticking and Disable User Account Control (UAC) in win 7 still the same
I googled the problem it seems lots people are haveing this problem

Seems you might be confused with what I meant, I mean go to your properties by right clicking the installer and check these 2 boxes and change the compat mode

seams like its just not me all the guys on the Steam web site say there have this problem,
Sticks at 26% i give up i will do my game shoping on bittormet site lol....

For a while about six months ago I had a similar problem when starting Steam. The dialog box 'updating Steam platform' would pop up on starting Steam and stall on 30-33%. I would just close this dialog box and restart Steam and it would never stall the second time.

This is unlikely to help you though, as yours seems more persistent. Just thought I'd share.

your lucky you got there the Steam working the Steam chat rooms gamers seem very p@@s about it not up dating
