Have a retro build I am working on. Athlon XP-M @ 2.2Ghz 400FSB 1GB DDR400 2-2-2-8, Abit NF7-S.

I am looking to replace the FX 5950 Ultra (really is terrible, but in good working condition). I orginally built it with a Radeon 9800 (which was much better especially DX9 games, but it died Several years ago. I like keeping this rig around for nastalgia reason, it was my first, so just looking a better card. Im torn between the X800 XL or a 6800 GT (mostly considering for SM3.0). I would like some thought of some users here. Thanks in advance.

I suppose you're probably not it pursuit of the top-end AGP card which would be bottlenecked by your CPU (like Radeon HD3850, HD4670). I'm a fan of the GeForce 7 series cards, so I'd probably be looking for the GAINWARD GeForce 7800GS+ AGP with 24pixel/8vertex pipes for nostalgia reason. Still remember I loved this card as it was pretty much on par with a regular 7900GT and a 7800GTX 256MB which were PCI-E limited. As for myself, I had a regular GeForce 7800GS (16pixel/6vertex pipes) and it was the most overclockable card I've ever had. It would hit 530/1500Mhz from default 375/1200 without any modifications. I also really liked a regular GeForce 6800 Ultra for its spiffy cooler. There's also such an AGP beast like a GeForce 7950GT AGP from XFX, however you're gonna need some luck finding one.

if we're talking retro gaming a 6600gt will do you just fine. Though personally getting my hands on a 6800 ultra would be pretty sweet, kinda like when I finally got a 9800 XT 256MB ( well after its time).

From the two you mentioned, I would personally choose the Geforce 6800GT, because the driver support; the Geforce 6 series was supported much longer by nVidia than ATI (AMD now) supported their X800 series. Also nVidia did have better opengl driver support than ATI, unless you are making use of modified drivers (e.g. Omega drivers). I had an AGP Geforce 6800 vanilla and a PCI-E 6800GS.

I have an Athlon XP 2500+ that I ran at 3200+ speed on an nForce2 board. I tried an X800 XL, 7800 GS, X850 Pro flashed to an XT and finally a 7600 GS with it. There's almost no difference between any of them with that CPU bottleneck.

I have had an nvidia 6800 GS XXX, it was a beast for it's time, but ok that was PCI-e.
I was playing GTA San Andreas with it back then.

X800XL is how I found this forum ages ago, trying to fix a bad bios that the prior owner flashed on it. It had a X800GTO bios with only 8 of the 16 pixel pipes working.

Flashing the X850 Pro Vivo to an XT was how I found this place. ;)

Ah Vivo, back in the days when ATI was able to be a complete entertainment system. Still have an All-in-Wonder HD with Remote Wonder. Kinda makes you wonder what the AMD/ ATI merger could have been if it wasn't saddled with debt.

Not sure on the 2400m but I have a 2600m that will go to 2.4 on air 2.7 on water. So there should be more headroom to try and minimize the bottleneck. You guys are making me want to go up into the attic and drag that rig down. It it's heyday it was setup as a "Fire Place" complete with faux facade and a built in lcd. Man I miss those days. Everything's become all about bigger and better and forget modding because it'll make it harder to upgrade. Sigh

Radeon had so many unlockable cards back then lol. Seemed like every low end card could be transformed into high end.

For that rig to game properly or run properly youll need Windows Xp

P.S. I had a X1950 Pro in it. A 4670 will run in it too.

I am running it with windows xp. Just keep checking eBay for a good deal.
I have a Chaintech Geforce 5900xt in box if you want it. Its AGP. Used it for a year back in 2004.

64 bit video memory bus on the HD2400. I think a 9800 Pro (256) would be much faster, even if the 2400 is newer.

Performance wise in memory bandwidth and Pixel Rates the 9700 Pro and 9800 Pro are faster. The 2400 had some newer features despite being an inferior card

X850XT PE is the one to go for if you can find one.
