Hey all,

So I've taken apart my laptop a few times in the past. Right now I'm not sure if I wrecked my laptop permanently or if it's just the fact that some of the ribbon cable snap-lock clips that are busted off are making it not work.

Things I've noticed:
That's basically it. Everything else seems fine, and the only reason I had it open to begin with was to re-apply thermal compound. I really don't have the funds at the moment to spend on a full-blown laptop. However - if getting a few spare parts off eBay(less than $65CDN) would make it cleaner, I'd go for that!

Thanks!

Ribbon cables tend to be very finiky in my experience, and chances are you probably won't be able to get them back down, adhesive most likely won't work for them, but kapton tape might work. Heatsink screws are going to be a little difficult as well, but if you have enough screws to push down on the major heat generating components you should be good.

That was my hopeful assumption about the screws. I might be able to go to a local comp shop and perhaps pay for loose laptop screws of similar gauge.

Kapton tape - "Kapton is a polyimide film developed by DuPont in the late 1960s[1] that remains stable across a wide range of temperatures, from −269 to +400 °C (−452 to 752 °F; 4–673 K)"

Yup sounds decent lol. Looks reasonable in price too at Walmart :)

Thanks therealmeep!

Kapton tape might not hold them down enough, broken clips like that tend to be game over, however im used to much smaller devices.

Honestly - I just want it functioning on my TV and I have a USB-BT Keyboard/Mouse combo. So the only ribbon cables I can think of that I need working is just the power button.

So if I could at least get it working as a static setup on my TV I'd be happy.

I might just take all the parts out of the laptop enclosure tonight and go to town. I was really only using the laptop as a HDMI Windows 10 media center.

If you only need display out and Bluetooth/power, you can probably just trace the cable back to where it goes and if its something like kb or display you're fine. I would also say that if you are having difficulty turning it on to enable in bios "boot after ac adapter plugged in" or whatever that equivalent so that you can just unplug it and plug it in to power it on.

Fair enough - Thank you.

Hey! Look at me! Reviving a dead post!

Question for hardware enthusiasts/techs: Is there a way to test for dead parts with some sort of hardware meter? I'm still wanting to run diagnostics on this machine and I don't know what exactly is my best option for doing so when everything is unplugged.

Is there such a thing or does every type of diagnostics require a power source for testing if it? Really curious and I'm sure it's one of those questions that could benefit many! :) I don't like it when my Lenovo y580 is dead =(

Thanks! =]

Multimeters work great for this, you can pick them up pretty darn cheap at harbor freight or your equivalent.

I thought multimeters required a power source? I can't even get this dang thing to power on at the moment!

If they do work without power, is there a website with reference to generic spots in a laptop that I could probe for testing?

Multimeters can probe without power. I use them a lot for this type of troubleshooting.

What do you mean? The only thing you can probe in a powerless laptop is cables, traces and resistors.

Does it still charge the battery? If not, make sure the power supply works and that the power plug is not damaged (which is pretty common).

Apart from that ... better to just replace the motherboard, assuming the CPU and RAM is ok and that everything is hooked up properly (which I gather you had some troubles with).
