Asking here if it's a good PSU. The Photon series expands from 500w to over 1000w so I'm assuming not all have the same quality or OEM.
Case in point the 750w reviewed by johnnyguru got "ok" whereas the 1050 reviewed by anandtech did pretty well.

I'm looking at the 850w in particular because it is going on sale at newegg in 20 minutes. With a basic look at the back it appears to have fixed everything johnnyguru didn't like about the 750w for the connectors.

The PSU itself is 80+Gold and fully modular, though only rated to 40c. Has mostly good ratings on newegg. There are no reviews I can find on the internet for the 850.

Thanks!

Reviews on Newegg don't look good, it also fails on hold up time which is >16ms and the total power rating is 850W on the 12V rail, meaning roughly 130+W gets deducted for the 3 and 5V sides.

It'll probably be good. End user reviews are pointless, they can only tell you if it's DOA or not.

This. Judging from newegg reviews, Seasonic's best PSUs are only "above average" and not the hallmark of quality reviewers note them to be. Usually hover around 4 eggs, because DOA users are much more likely to post...

Since when is being able to deliver full capacity on the 12V rail a place to nitpick? :p

They also downgrade products because the box was smashed when delivered, or because it was delivered a day late, or because the buyer didn't bother to read the description and ordered the wrong product. I only pay attention to user reviews when there are many that report the exact same problem.

Newegg reviews for the 850 average 4 eggs so not sure why you would say they don't look good. As for the hold-up time, yes the 750W failed (miserably!) and that is not good. But as noted, larger caps would likely correct that and while we don't know (because of no professional reviews) it is likely the larger PSU while have larger caps. That said, everyone IS running their computers off a "good" UPS with AVR anyway, right? So hold up time is not really that critical.

I note the JonnyGuru gave the 750 an "okay" primarily because of value and because the main PCB was cracked. The 850 being on sale should take care of the value issue and it is not likely it will come with a cracked circuit board.

NO DOUBT, it is essential to provide our computers good, clean, quality power. But we don't have to buy the absolute top of the line. If the price is right and this Rosewill Photon-850 otherwise will meet your needs, I say go for it.
