yea so i am needing a new router, and i had a dlink 524, and that has been retired. now i am looking at the dlink dgl 4300. i am looking at this because of the gigabit ports, and need wifi because of other computers in the house. is it worth the 150$ cdn i will pay?

can get a 524 for about 50$ cdn, so that just to compare. and yes thats the gaming router. but its the only router that has gigabit ports. i will not go with netgear, i see to many netgear problems from work, and thats the only other gigbit router that i can find in canada.

FYI, we use Netgear ProSafe routers. Never a problem. Just make sure you get ProSafe (much better firmware and build quality) and not a "consumer" article. They have good firewalls, port blockers, port forwarding and logging tools. They also have QoS.

Also consider having the main WAN router separate from the wireless capability. A good router will last you years... but wireless is being constantly updated. You might want to be able to update your wireless next year...

Consider FVS124G as your gigabit WAN router, and FWG114P or WG302 as your local wireless. Check ebay to save $$$.

Alternatively, just use a FWG114P or FVG318 as your WAN router, with a GS105 as your local gigabit hub.

Like previous posters, I've had problems with consumer NetGear items... but then again, the consumer Dlink were worse.

i will take a look at the netgear routers, but i have seen so many problems with them ( i work on phone tech support) and we get calls constantly with netgear issues, never linksys or dlink issues. i don't know why the company sells the netgear products, but i still think dlink and linksys are better products.

Ohhh na, its not a high end router, but its pretty good. Put it this way, i got it for $30 brand new about a year and a half ago (ebay :D), when RRP was $150. (Still is around $80).

My friend who lives a couple of houses up the street manages to pick the network up and connect to it :D...not bad for a cheapy router :).

Havent had any problems with it as of yet *touch wood*

i'm sure, but does it have gigabit ethernet ports?

I doubt you'll use the fact that it *has* gigabit.

Especially with wireless, its even moreso useless.

i am not using wifi, the other computers in the house are. my computer will, and i am just thinking for when there is huge file transfers, which i do a lot of, is the main reason for the gigabit ports.

why do you need gigabit if your net speed isnt going to break 100mb/s :p???

because he will have multiple PC's connected to the router, and he wants fast file transfer between them.

However - why not use a seperate gigabit switch instead? why have it integrated?

Integrated is just easier. Like why not just get the whole gigabit router instead of getting the gigabit switch and keeping the crappier router :p

And yea ex_reven, its transferring files b/w two comps that he wants the speed increase :)

I dont get it... Whats the diff between 10/100 connection and a gigabit connection?
A gigabit connection transmits at a gigabit per second correct?
A gigabit is only 128mb...

28mb speed increase isnt something to go crazy over. :ohwell:

Quite simple because 10/100 connection is a "bit" not "byte" connection. It is 10x faster, not 28mb faster. :)

Sometimes i wish I had gigabit ethernet...when sending 10GB game folders over the network ;)

They are other factors that prevent one in having a true gigabit speeds such as hard disk speeds or south bridge etc...

In other words, you gonna be as fast as the slowest speed (the bottleneck)...

Note that unless you have a pro network card, a 1GB connection will use more CPU.

BUT... if more than 1 PC on the network, there is less congestion.

yea, well i got the router, got it set up, updated firmware. file transfers are blazing fast. it prob cust off a good 20-30 seconds at least for a 1gb transfer between two computers. both are integrated gigabit ethernet on the pci-e bus. so i think it was worth the money. i would recommend this router to anyone with the money right now.

Congrats on your purchase.

However, I would have a Linksys WRT54GL and a separate gigabit switch, that is, IMO, much more practical. That why if the router dies you still have the gigabit switch and you can replace it with just about any router you want, and still have a gigabit network. Plus the WRT54GL is probably the best router available, and can be had for around $50, which leave about $100 for a gigabit switch, which should give you a nice 8 port.

I have also found that most routers that sport gigabit ports don't handle jumbo frames that well, if they do it at all. So while large file transfers do go faster with a gigabit router vs. a 100Mb router, they don't go nearly as fast as they do with a seperate switch.
