I changed hardware as well, twice in the last 2 months. Didn't get a sinlge survey prompt.

Anyway, it's currently much easier to buy a prebuilt with Ampere, and I would argue a fair chunk if not the majority of those 200k are from prebuilts. Chip makers prioritizing the OEM market instead of DIY market in not really a surprise.

Yeah I got like 2 prompts in the last 3 years and I changed hardware alot.
Steam just choose the survey participants randomly and non overlapping to keep the statistic as precise as possible.

You can actually buy a prebuilt with 3080, take the GPU, put your old GPU in and flip the prebuilt and it would cost less than buying the standalone 3080 from scalpers.

From another person:
The 980 first showed up in the November 2014 survey with 0.18% market share, 74 days after launch. The 1080 first showed up in the July 2016 survey with 0.26% market share, 65 days after launch. Finally, the 2080 first showed up in December 2018 with 0.21%, 102 days after launch. For comparison the 3080 is at 0.22%, also 74 days after launch.

That would make
980 grow 0.07% per month
1080 grow 0.12% per month
2080 grow 0.06% per month
3080 grow 0.09% per month

% - percentage points, not relative percentage

Not unprecedented number of sales by any stretch of imagination. Although someone could correct it for Steam user base growth if they have time.

Wow very nice info, however Steam active users grew fast these couple years :D

That grew to 95mil active users in 2019, in 2020 Steam user base should have grew exponentially.
So yeah, percentage-wise 3080 is not that impressive, but the unit sale is.

Here is Mindfactory sales data for week 48. Unless you own stock, I find this Stockholm syndrome to be quite bizzare. Amount of Ampere cards (not dies) sold is definitely not significantly higher than what Pascal had in the same time period.

Heh, one single etailer in a single country tell nothing about the whole picture. Can you list all the etailers and retailer that sell Ampere in your country ?
Here in SEA stock of Ampere and Ryzen 5000 are aplenty, nothing to complain really.

Also thanks to the current pandemic, we flight crews have to stay in quarantine for 14 days after we fly overseas, that include Cargo flights. So yeah, logistic has been painfully slow these time, you can cry if you want but these are extraordinary hard time for everyone.

It's too bad that Steam does not show all your hardware or even your best PC. Right now my laptop is the GPU attached to my Steam Account.

I haven't used Steam in almost a year now. They don't get my information anymore.

Also, I don't think it's relevant if they do gather people's hardware information, their current UI runs like garbage across a wide range of hardware and OSes....so maybe Valve is just curious as to how many different systems it can fuck their software up on. Perhaps they're trying to one-up Microsoft?

The survey is optional, it's a pop up that you can (as I did on the 1st of this month) decline should the client decide to ask.

Anyway, back to my tinfoil hat.

Steam currently has around 100 millions active users base, so 0.23% mean around 230k people are playing with their shiny 3080. If this trend continue, 3080 will become the most popular high end GPU ever to release, replacing the venerable 1080 Ti

That's a really brave extrapolation of data with possible self-selection bias:
Self-selection bias is possible whenever the group of people being studied has any form of control over whether to participate
They might correct the numbers for it, or they might not (they don't disclose the methodology), but if they don't, you could be way way off the real numbers.

It's a pop-up that asks you to participate in the survey. I've gotten it once, a couple months ago. You're able to decline it when it happens. It's not going on in the background gathering data all the time. They gather the data when the popup happens, not continously. Not all users get it, like I said I've only gotten it once (they run it each month), and I've been using Steam for over 8 years now.
I've gotten and responded to the Steam Hardware survey at least a ten times in a dozen years. I see no problem, as it lists what is being collected and it goes to painting a fairly good picture of the Steam community hardware. It's much like legitimate polling. If you take a large enough sample and stick to basics, it is pretty accurate.

I actually did one recently. They pop up once in awhile and I usually send the info.

I scour the web daily for a RTX 3080 but I never have any luck other than scalpers. I'd buy one right now at normal price.

This may seems like a surprise to many gloomers, Nvidia actually did produce a lot of 3080 and they were instantly sold out.

View attachment 177943

Steam currently has around 100 millions active users base, so 0.23% mean around 230k people are playing with their shiny 3080. If this trend continue, 3080 will become the most popular high end GPU ever to release, replacing the venerable 1080 Ti

Must be faked. The only people that own them are the scalpers and then maybe like 1000 lucky people beyond that lol. Can't compete against bots. I ended up just buying a 5700 XT, as it is a good cost to performance ratio. Many people are just buying last gen cards. They are actually almost impossible to find too now, for a reasonable price. 5700 XTs, 2070 Supers, 2080s...hard to find. I call it the "biggest last gen blowout" I've ever seen...and it could be by design. The last gen cards didn't sell as well as the ones before it. I think the GTX 2000 series they say was not very well received, compared to the 1000s.
