Hey guys!

I bought a RTX 2080 Super MSI TRIO, but my FPS on PUBG is around 100, very close to what I already had with an 8gb RX580 ..

I play in 1920x1080 with all game settings at very low, only smoothing at high. As I play, my CPU usage is fluctuating at all times between 40-70%, while my GPU is between 30-50% and all temps under 60ºC
Is it something misconfigured or I have a bottleneck in my config?

The last time I ran that game, it was horrendously optimized. I’m not sure if that has changed since then, but that’s what I was pulling with a GTX 1080.

I haven’t played it in over a year, but I don’t think your system is bottlenecked excessively.

Have a 1700 and that seems about right for usage percentage on a lot of games.

i had a 1700, you definitely will be held back around the 100FPS mark with a first gen ryzen
2nd gen got a me a nice boost to around the 120 mark, 3rd would go even higher again.

PUBG is moderately optimised for ryzen now, but it's just a poor match for first gen ryzen (to be fair, 100FPS is certainly enough for most people)

Definitely, you have a CPU bottleneck. A 3700X would solve it.

Do you know much about older games? Like say I want to replay the original mass effect someday, would a 3rd gen ryzen hold me back? no one ever seems to do benches on very old AAA games, so I'm just not sure what to expect. will it just run like crap since most of them games were developed when Intel was like 90% market share?

Worst case is performance like an i5 of that era - i'm yet to run into a game that runs terrible. The literal worst case was PUBG running at around 60FPS before they improved things on my ryzen 1700

Even if you would upgrade to something faster you'd still run into the same problem more or less.

1080p means you'll be CPU limited in most cases these days.

Yes, even in other games, a 1800X will bottleneck a 2080S. I'd recommend a 3600 or a 3700X if you can find one.

What's the best processor to run with this GPU?
9900K

being on AM4 already, a 3600 seems like a huge single threaded performance boost for a low-ish cost.

Yes, bottleneck, BUT an alternative that can mitigate the bottleneck is to upgrade your display to 1440p. You get the benefit of a larger, better looking, more immersive screen without unnecessarily having to waste money on new CPU/motherboard. Shame to be wasting a 2080 on 1080p.

I agree with the other guys, it's both a poorly unoptimized game & bit of a bottleneck due to slightly lower clocks on first gen Ryzen, IPC & higher latency but I mean 100fps should be enough for most of us, that's if it's not fluctuating too much. I suggest updating the bios on whatever motherboard you have & purchase a Ryzen 5 3600 or if you got some dosh to spare a 3700X. :toast:

That's my point exactly, he's created an artificial cpu bottleneck by turning all graphical settings down to low and making the cpu do all the work

because PUBG benefits a lot from lower settings and higher FPS, its an extremely competitive game and frame drops at the wrong time can lose you a 30 minute match - stay ontopic.

Have you optimized your ram with rtzen calc? Is it 3200cl14 ram? If that is the case you can probably run it at 3600cl16 or maybe cl14 with optimized sub timings. That can improve your fps quite a bit.

It's not your system, it's the game. Very unoptimized. Try a few other games and benchmarks and you will see much better results. Heck, I have an OG 2080 with an older Xeon X5680 and games are only just being bottlenecked by the CPU. Your 1800X is much faster, so it has to be that game. Have you tried turning off AntiAliasing?

pubg doesn't love OG ryzen. You will benefit alot from windows software tweaking:

- Disable exploit protection for PUBG
- Use Intelligent Standby List Cleaner (ISLC)
- Tweak your TRFC timing on ram

If your goal is gaming you could sell that 1800x and get a 3600, that would boost your gaming performance quite a bit.

Low gpu utilization is mostly due to running a powerful gpu at 1080p , but the game is also not making use of the available cpu power. I've averaged 120fps at low settings 1080p with my fury /1800x setup and now am hitting 130 to 150 fps averages at ultra settings with the 2080.
In Crysis 3 , I can max out the RTX 2080 surprisingly often at 1080p ultra settings when paired with my old FX rig.

Yea a nice little 25% bump in performance from 1700x to a 3700x and the 2700x right in the middle (where I am :D )

Even the IPC gains on a 3600X (to help with costs) would be worth it.

Gaming optimization out of the picture of course.
