So it is a waste of money to buy this RX480 if you already on GTX 970, 290X, 390 or any faster card?

Depends on ur resolution i still think a RX480 8GB would do better than a GTX 970 4GB with the 3.5GB vram issue still being here.

what is 3.5gb vram issue? In some games, I max out 4gb vram and don't see anything wrong. Yes, 8GB vram is better.

I still have it in some games not all, depending on how good they r optimized, i noticed that going the Beta of Mirror's Edge Catalyst for an example it did maxed out everything at 2560x1440 and using like 3.5~3.9GB vram and it didn't noticed a lot of fps drops or lag only sometimes but after the release it was down under 3.6GB vram all times so I guess EA did a lot of out or it was just a bad beta but still I got games like Assassin's Creed Syndicate I want to game again but it can use more than 3.5GB vram in no time and it lags for me.

So gaming at 2560x1440@100~120hz I planning on trying out this new RX480 in the 8GB version before buying a GTX 1070 bcs this will be much cheaper even in my country.

"amount of VRAM doesn't matter"

No point to upgrade 290x/970 - but if you going to buy a new 1, so RX 480 is awesome option.

+My 290x still can handle games up to 3440x1440 and 90% of the games are using over 3,8GB of VRAM without AA.

This here is full-hd over that resolution in most cases benefits from +4GB vram and i even noticed that when I had a GTX Titan with Assassin's Creed Syndicate but I still went back to a GTX 970 bcs of the power drawing and miracast which the Kepler didn't have but the Maxwell does.

My next card will be GTX 1080 or 1080Ti, the difference will be day and night. The rx480 won't give me substantial gain.

1. You can't compare price of 3 years old used product and new one.
2. 290x were used to get bit coins, so i won't recommend any one to get a used 290X from some one you don't know.
3. 290X TDP 250~320w while RX 480 100~160w.

RX 460,470,480 - were made for low/mid end market, if you could get gtx 1070 / 1080 for 450$+ without tax so why not.

RX480 will be a great upgrade for 70-75% of the gamers though. Especially for whoever is on a budget, doesn't change GPUs every year or so and needs to be in sync with DX12...

I can't remember a stock card that oc well.

290x - high noise levels + high temperatures
280x - were already oc to the limits.
270x - high noise levels ?
260x - simple cooler like on RX 460.

I can't remember stock 900 Series but 1K series isn't better.

42dbA - stock fan settings.

Stock clocks...
Under load, the card reaches its thermal limit of 84°C after a minute of gaming or so, which will cause it to lower Boost clocks, and, as such, performance.

How much dbA you have after overclock ? 50 ?

Hi gasoline,
can you download and run the Heaven 4.0 benchmark with your RX 480?

This would be great. :)

Just go to youtube and find the gtx 980 or gtx 970 OC, amd 390 result, the rx480 is inline with that result.

I think gasoline thought 1.6ghz rx480 will be faster than 980ti then he bought it. Turn out its a big BS.

Same like 2.0/2.2Ghz Factory Overclocked 1080s rumor ? or 649$ 290X rumor(3years ago) ?

@gasolina

You state you can't adjust voltage, can you not see these controls? see image in spoiler below, expand the driver page you showed in a screenshot before.

Voltage won't help, 75(PCI-E)+75[+](6x Pins)=150w, his gpu already using 170w...

75W from 6 pin is what PCI-SIG guideline is ;) , hardware spec is higher :) . IMO ~190W is available from 6 pin and another 75W from slot. Check some info in this link , note in 6 pin table in notes they state:-

N/C = No connection; however, many PSUs include a redundant +12V (yellow) wire at pin 2.

So technically a 6 pin is pretty much like an 8 pin.

AMD bios PowerTune works on GPU stats for TDP, etc :) .

IMO the bios would have ample PowerLimit default values and upping powerlimit via driver would increase that limit.

For example stock Fury X ROM has 270W TDP 300A TDC 300 MPDL when you add 50% via MSI AB, etc it adds to those values. I recently asked The Stilt this information as I run Hawaii/Fiji bios mod threads on OCN.

I tough we talked about stock cards like RX 480.
Not water cooled ones.

Btw you has 2 WATER COOLED GTX 980 TI SLI.

You wanted to sell ur RX 480 to get back to ur GTX 1070 SLI setup.

Are you real ... ? or just trolling ?
my point is the overclock potential and performance when Oc ......
i'm serious not trolling around. I did pre order the 1070 and then their Oc is not good then i just sold it away, i know it sounds crazy but i just want high overclock stuff because to me it feels perfect, back to old days i love the gtx 460, the Ti ones, 7850, 7950, 290x

no man, from the specs i do think the 480 will be 390/390x level the guys from HIS/Gigabyte told me that on June 20th and the card was in my hands at June 22nd i went through lot of troubles with my recent build and prepared the wc stuff for them but their oc now seems like a big issue. Take 290/290x the shaders difference is 256sp, at same clock the performance is around 6% higher ( same 512 bit bandwidth ). Therefore a 1266 MHz df clock of Rx480 with less than 512sp which make me think at same 512 bit with 2304 would be 12% slower than a 290x but with 256 bit would be 22% to 25% and that 1266 clock comes to my thought they would be same level. 1,6 would not be faster than a 980Ti but in 2 more years may be, at first release the 290x < 780Ti but now 290x > 780Ti 10% at 4k.

yes i did change that but the number went back to 1081 so i can't adjust the voltage of core but for mem clock i can get it to 2200 by adding from 1075 to 1120 i guess the mem clock could get to 2300+

It's an obvious fake, it's factually impossible for a low TDP to be hitting 90c+ on a cooler that can dissipate the sun below 20c.

if you're in Saigon I will be happy to let you take the cards for the test dude. Actually when the temperature is high the clock reduce to 11xx and lower it's your choice to set up the fan and which I did it's kinda loud . here is the driver I upload https://www.mediafire.com/?h13f6szrakcp11i
