Hi
i recently got hold of some sapphire nitro rx 480 8gb cards which had previously been used for mining. i used gpu z to check the specs of the graphics card. in the gpu clock section it said 0 mhz and 1306 in the default clock. upon research i found out the miner probably flashed the card with a mining bios or something. i have installed the drivers but the gpu is not being shown as well as the windows is not recognising the graphics card. i can see the name of the gpu in the gpu z software so it is a legit card. i got the bios from the techpowerup site which matched the default clock speed and memory speed of the gpu and downloaded it. i used atiflash 2.94 to to browse and and pressed the program button to flash it. it flashed the card and rebooted it. And now i could see the clock speeds and temperatures were also being shown using msi afterburner and hwinfo. so the windows recognised the driver. so i ran some benchmarks and temps were a little high but the card was WORKING. i played some games and was also working fine apart from the temps which were in the 70 degrees range. i turned the pc off and turned it on the next day and all of a sudden the pc is not showing any video output. at boot the fans of the gpu were also not spinning. so i tried the gpu in another rig and also got the same result. NO OUTPUT. so is the card dead or what. what did i do wrong?? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello
In order to help you, we will need some photos:
a picture from your labels (stickers) from your card
a picture from GPU-z
a picture from the memory chips (you must open the card)

In order to be sure I will need this pictures for each and every card.
There is a small chance that you have same model and ID of the card and same memory chips but we don't wanna risk anything.
So...hurry up

Ok. From what you described here you have a card that is half dead.
I also own a card with this symptom and i finally decided i would send it to repair when i will find someone to do that.
IF your card is not visible at all in the device manager then before trying to repair it at a hardware level i suggest you read the following :

From this i suggest to short the flash pins and after the windows finish loading all drivers you can take off the short and you can try then to check if you can see the card in device manager.
After this procedure if you see it, then you have a card with a wrong BIOS flashed in it and you will be guided to flash it back.
If you do not see it in device manager even after this pin short procedure, then probably you own a half dead card that need further assistance from a special shop.
Cheers

Attach i posted the picture you took from video card and i pointed out which pins should be shorted.
Keep us informed about how it went.
Also please post a picture from the stickers(labels) from your video card.
Good luck!

OK. In case you succeed to start the card with short pin procedure i have all i need in order to identify correctly the BIOS for your card and i have also the memory chip producer.
We wait now to see if you have luck to start the card.

hi again. sorry for the late reply. unfortunately the pin method didnt workout for me. i have since been trying to get my hands on a ch341a programmer and try that instead before i take it to a repair shop. i just dont understand what could be the problem. i refuse to believe that the card is dead and theres no repair for it. because it was working with the bios reflasah and then decided to not turn on after a couple of days. this i cannot understand. but i will try purchasing the usb programmer and try my luck with that. thanks for all the help and will keep u updated.

It may just be a pure coincidence, what i find "disturbing" is that u got a card which was previously used for mining. These cards may have problems with vram chips or the gpu itself. If you are still struggling with your rx 480, i suggest to bake it in oven at 185C (370F) for a couple of minutes (5 minutes would be enough). Of course u need to only "bake" the logic board, without heatsink/screws/thermal pads etc. Good thing would be covering the plastic connectors (pcie power, fan connector) with foil to avoid melting them. Then u should let it to cool down. Aseemble the card and test it. IF it actually turns on then u got vram/gpu problem (which was temporarily "fixed" by the heat).

As you said in the beginning, when you flashed the card and then rebooted the system soonly afterwards everything worked fine. Which indicates that the bios was actually flashed well and there was no issue (cuz bad flash manifests itself upon reboot). So that is why i highly doubt it was a bad flash in ur case.
