RX 480 disappointing ... what next ?

Hello, I bought 2 weeks ago an XFX Radeon RX 480 Core Edition and I had problems with it from the start: the graphics card was freezing and restarting my PC when playing games on any driver newer than July 2016, Crimson 16.7.1

I had changed my power supply from Corsair CX500M to SilverStone SST-SX500-LG v 2.0 and the problem persisted, a problem I did not had with my Sapphire Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition which is strange because the TDP of the cards is the same.

I tried undervolting the GPU to 1050 in Wattman and tried it in MSI Afterburner too (not at the same time if you wanted to ask) and added 20 value to power control and it did let me play games without restarting the PC but only on the Crimson 16.7.1 driver.

I tried reinstalling drivers newer and older with DDU and with AMD Driver Uninstaller many times in Safe Mode and did not change anything.

I did not try other possible solution because I do not want to reinstall my Windows because of lack of free time. Right now I have returned the graphics card to Amazon and awaiting the refund but I need a new graphics card because I have to give the HD 7770 away. I wanted to get a GTX 1060 6GB instead until I realized I cannot use a Free Sync monitor, which I want to buy and is a must, and G Sync monitor are very expensive compared to Free Sync (at least 27 inch IPS 2560 by 1440). I wish to get an ultra wide monitor and the G Sync models are tears-inducing expensive. Should I try to get another RX 480 model ? Its heart breaking to see AMD mess up the RX 480 models, the unstable (but fixed ?) power consumption through PCI Express, drivers seems to be a miss too. I have a week and a half to decide and I am unsure what to do.

My budget is 300 £ and I want to game at max (not necessarily Ultra settings) quality at 2560 by 1440 or 2560 by 1080 at 40 to 60 FPS (with Free Sync there should be any difference in how it feels as long as it stays above 30 FPS).

Sounds to me the card was DOA, just get it replaced.
DOA can always happen with any piece of hardware sadly.

Also I would sooner point the finger at XFX here then AMD, in this case XFX put the card together and were responsible for testing.
Obviously something could have happened in transport aswell..... whatever just get a new rx480 and see how that works out.

My budget is 300 £ and I want to game at max (not necessarily Ultra settings) quality at 2560 by 1440

Must i be the one to point this out i wonder?

My budget is a few thousands bucks and i want a Nissan 370z (not necessarily with all the extras). It must be blue though, am really particular.

edit: irony aside, unless you already own a good CPU, an average or above RAM and have a spare PSU that can pull more than 500, methinks you're asking for a lot.

What????? No.. that's misinformed... :(

* Not sure what a "good" CPU means... but, that makes little sense with a 480
* RX480 will be fine on his new PSU... why would he need more than 500W?
* What does average or above average ram have to do with it? For intel, I would snag some DDR4 3000-3200 CL15. Its the sweetspot. Performance doesn't scale much higher than this (perhaps there is an outlier). But you don't need "above average ram".

It would help to see you system specs. Also, that PSU only has 40amps on the 12v rail, which is pretty weak.

That aside, it's most likely a bad unit. It happens to everyone who builds pc's. Just RMA it.

No specs.. 300bucks because he has all else covered, fine.. otherwise, problem. As for the PSU, maybe he has a bulldozer, how would i know. And oh ninjaed already, see Evo's post above.

480W on a 500W PSU... I wouldn't call that weak... I do want to hear about the rest of the PC however. Most are fine with a quality 500W unit and a 480. ;)

It is though, the closer you get to half the output, the better the curve. If you need 480W on a 500W and call it O.K., dunno, to each their own.

edit: and i do not represent TPU, only myself :)

post edit: I did read your edit, you're assuming his RAMs are fine. I don't. Likewise for his chip; why should i assume? I just said that unless he -only- lacks a GPU for 1.4k, 300 bucks is just pushing it.

You talking about efficiency?????? I mean, you are correct, but, by what... 1-2% from just above idle to full load/capacity on the PSU? Have you ever seen a modern PSU's efficiency curve? With respect I am guessing not... otherwise, your opinion would likely be different.

I didn't say to run a PSU at 480W out of 500W. What I was responding to was what Evo said, the PSU has 480W on the 12V rail. The 480 is a 150W card... studies show it over that, 164W or so. Let's say 200W. So unless he has an overclocked 145W intel chip or AMD FX octo overclocked. There shouldn't be any concerns with power on a quality PSU. :)

While you represent yourself, you are giving out poor advice on this subject. That kind of advice can cause others to spend more than they have to, in this case. The zeal to help others is certainly appreciated, but... that can also backfire if one doesn't know what they are talking about.

We really need to get an idea of the rest of his specs, but, he should be fine in the majority of cases. :)

Definitely try getting another one for replacement and to answer your other question what else are you running in terms of hardware? I'm not fan of Silverstone PSU which for less money you could have gotten semi-modular 600-650W EVGA PSU which has gotten positive reviews if i remember correctly? Use that small extra £10-20 and few extra saving on top of £300 you could possibly push for GTX1070 if you're not planning on getting Rx480 again.

Goes without saying, including what it entails for my giving a wrong advice.
Just honestly thought (and think so still barring full system specs) that based on his budget, way of describing the issue and the actual title itself (in as far as what it denotes) that chances are he's pushing it.

Again though, you have a point, so if i am or proven to be wrong, my apologies to everyone; disregard my above posts.

I'm wondering how he is going to do max quality on 2560 x 1440 on a 480. I've not seen a review yet that said it can do that. The majority of games is not possible? Max out 1920 x 1080 yes, and play 1440 passably with some settings turned down, yes, is what I have seen.

WTF? I have never seen a collection of more bad advice in one place before. I thought I started reading a Tom's hardware thread.

The card is bad. Anytime you have a card that goes unstable with newer drivers the card is bad. Period. End of story.

The powersupply is MORE than enough for his build short of having 15 hard drives shoved in it.

480w on a 12v rail is plenty for this. Anyone who says differently is wrong. Get over it.

2560x1440 is medium/high settings for a single 480. Certainly not maxing it out.

Anything else anyone wants to be corrected on?

:toast::rockout::respect::toast:These words are so true. Sometimes it can get so far out of hand from as simple as language barrier to just plain stubbornness.
Not saying that about this thread by no means, just in general everywhere

As for the 480, exchange it for the XFX GTR version. It seems it has been a great card, very cool and quiet and pretty good on overclocking. Could help out on the 1440 visuals

A single RX480 is a 1080p card, if you want good fps @ 1440p high settings? Buy a GTX1070 and call it a day.

Well, that's likely a 1 off issue as plenty of people here and around buy those cards and have no issues. Sounds like the card could not handle its clocks.

If you want a different card and want more performance, try this.
Sapphire R9 Fury OC
Yes its a little older but its a more powerful card and will handle 1440p with FreeSync just fine and it is also within your budget. While it is a bit more wattage than your other cards, it is still fine to run it on a 500watt PSU as long as the rest of your system is not in the extreme range of components.

If not, your only other options are an R9 390X or another RX 480X.

Yuppers

His PSU is fine

He just happened to get a dud card, no biggie, happens to all manufacturers no matter AMD or Nvidia based.

He just wanted to try to place blame where it doesn't belong.

Swap the Card for another and move on.

Have a 250X core edition here, runs perfectly fine.

Have a 290 Vapor X, been running solid since 2014.

@qubit can attest to a palit 1080 being bad twice!

Get it back and buy 1060 6 Gb,some Rx 480 still have issues, not all are good.. thats why i go with RX 480 Msi
No reason to get a 1060 if the 480 just needs an RMA. That's literally what RMA is for; get a different one if one is defective.

Yeah I learned my lesson with XFX. Got a good deal on a 380X and the first one was just kick the bucket on me. It booted fine ..Installed drivers rebooted ..Got to windows and poof it was gone. Newegg made good on it..Sent me a new one and it's never given a problem. I know this is no selling point for some but overclocking is non existent on it.

Oh and for the record I'm running

4770 non k
380X
16gb ram
2 1tb drives
2 ssds
5 120 fans
External drives
Countless USB stuff

All on a 480 watt power supply....Never a issue

I think it's 380X in general. I have a Sapphire. Damned fine card, but overclock 1Mhz even with voltage unlocked and ulps turned off and it locks the system up. So I gave up trying.
