RX 570 vs GTX 1050 Ti - w/c is better for thermals and power consumption?

So I'm building a system for my little brother with the old parts I've lying around (i5-7400, 8gb DDR4 ram, h110M) and I plan to buy a GPU just to get him something usable. He mostly plays R6:Siege and Overwatch, so maybe 1080p 60 fps @low/Med is more than enough for him for now.

My concern is the case I'm using is a relative cheap OEM case with kinda bad airflow. No places to mount extra fans and the only exhaust it has is the PSU mounted on top. I also don't want the PC to be eating a of lot wattage as he mostly plays the whole day on weekends and with that case I'm worried that getting an RX 570 might just heat soak everything.

a GPU w/o any 6/8 pin connector would be nice hence why I'm looking at the GTX 1050 ti, and my experience with AMD drivers and underclocking recently is not amazing, but not bad. I want a system that i can just setup and he doesn't have to worry about drivers and whatnot.

I want to hear your thoughts on an RX 570 vs GTX 1050 Ti in this case. Raw Performance the RX 570 wins, but for what I need the GTX 1050 Ti fits the bill. (1650 is out of the question as they're kinda bad price to performance atm)

If it were me, rather than dish out for another middling card, I’d give him the RX 480 listed in your specs, and get something better for myself.

If it’s just a crappy old case you don’t care about, you could just dremel a hole in the top and add an exhaust fan plus a grille.

The RX 570 is a lot faster, the 8GB model even more - and its cheaper (well, at least here in Europe) than the 1050Ti.
Of course the 1050Ti has lower power consumption and heat output, but a decent 400W PSU is gonna have no problem powering the 570.
The i5 7400 isnt amazingly fast and only 4C/4T, but certainly enough to be paired with a middle class GPU.

dont forget options like WATTMAN and ichill and whatever with the AMD card - its faster out of the box, so you can sacrifice some performance and kick the heat and power saving features up to their maximums (FPS limit to 60, etc)

I guess I can give my two cents here since I myself have low spec midrange card in my current build the RX460 single slot. It is slower than a 1050ti, I don't really play much recent games but it hold older games from 2012 to 2016 just fine at 1080p. There is plenty of head room if you go mid and low settings. So I wouls expect a 1050ti to do even better.

I would still recommend a more powerful card when possible it allow you to have more headroom down the road. Depends on your needs esports like title are perfect for 1050ti likes cards.

Rx570 is actually rather power efficient when underclock. It is when it is ran at high clock that it sucks up power and heat up.

AMD cards can be undervolted in most scenarios which will lower the consumption.

And I don't see that as a problem if there's no PCIe connector, most people have drawers full of molex->PCIe adapters. And if you don't have one, they're cheap.

Get a blower card if you are really worried about it, that way it won't dump heat into the case.

You can find cheap 1060 3GB OEM HP or Dell models on eBay, like $100 shipped. Deals are out there. Just avoid counterfeit graphics cards (usually fairly obvious, usually has a generic heatsink and shipped from China).

Enabling VSYNC also gives the thermals a break, as the card won’t work as hard to push max FPS. I have the Pulse 570 in my rig, and it never really gets that loud or hot.

Use a frame rate limiter rather than vsync, OP concerns competitive games...

Well, a RX 570 is going to generate a good bit more heat because it uses a good bit more watts:

The Sapphire 570 I referenced does require one 8 pin power connector. Most 1050 Ti that I've seen require one 6 pin connector.

Of the two I would take the 570 and take the side panel off. If you have a small room fan you could use that for cooling on days when he's playing all day long.

At least here in Finland RX 570 is cheaper and even RX 580 is priced similarly. GTX 1650 has a terrible price/performance ratio.

Yes it runs hotter and blah blah blah but it's not that much of a difference... A rear 80mm exhaust fan should be enough...
The 1050ti just doesn't make sense regardless...

No. you can't simply subtract 68 from 100 to get the correct percentage. If you multiply 68 X 1.32 you get 89.75 and not 100.
To get 100 where the 570 is rated you have to multiply 68 X 1.47 so the 570 is around 45% faster than the 1050 Ti. 47% faster to be exact.

More crazy talk would be to get the 570 and just find a better case for him to grow into. Even a $30-40 case is going to have more potential for adding fans or just upgrading anything else later.

I've been debating whether or not I should just get myself a new card and give him this RX480 as one of you guys suggested. My problem with my RX 480 (or rather AMD in my case) is that on reboot the undervolts reset to default. I'm happy with my undervolted performance but my little brother isn't really as tech savvy as me so maintaining an undervolt would be nice.

Is there any way that I can edit the cards bios so that the undervolt sticks w/o resorting to software? if I could make that happen I'd totally just do that.

If I do ever decide on getting a new card, Would a 1660/ti be a good step up from the RX 480? RTX 2060 prices are kinda bad here, and the cheapest RX 5700 is $400.

EDIT: also used is kinda out of the question as I'm using a card to buy the rest of the remaining parts. I'll also buy him a new case

Yeah, it just doesn't make sense to me to spend money on a RX570 when you have a very similarly performing RX480 in your PC and I'm sure you wouldn't mind an upgrade. The problem is, there's a big jump in prices once you go above a Polaris. While a 1660 Ti would be a measurable upgrade (about 40% according to TPU's metrics), you'd probably want to go to a 2060 or 5700 to make it worthwhile.

Actually.....looking at your specs, it looks like you're still at 1080p. I'm changing my recommendation. I wouldn't upgrade your GPU unless you're also going to upgrade your display. For your brother, a used GTX 970 (like the one I just replaced with a 5700 XT) or a 1060 would do nicely. Both are still solid performers at 1080p, not terribly power hungry, and faster than a 1050 Ti and 1650. You could also wait to see what Navi 14 brings to the table.

A 1660 Ti would be a very nice upgrade from a RX 480. The 580 in the chart below is a bit faster than a 480. So you would probably be looking at around a 45% to 50% increase in performance with the 1660 Ti. If I were going to buy a 1660 Ti I would go with this MSI Gaming model. It should last you for a few years at 1080p.
