RX Vega 56 hard locks PC

Hi,

I Recently upgraded to a RX Vega 56. Great performance upgrade from a 270X. Noticed strange behaviour when the PC is in idle state, no apps open. The PC hard locks so bad that you have to shut it off from the PSU switch

What could be wrong? Running latest driver from AMD still getting hangs.

Can u look at ur event viewer after a lock?

It could be anything from a piece of software that's throwing a fit (like chrome), to a faulty card, to you knocking loose a sata cable during install (loose sata cables can cause hard locks).

I’m suspecting the 650W PSU you have

Do you have another PSU you could test with or a friend who has a PC you can test the GPU in ?

Yeah that's a low end psu.

Seams it's not handling idle very well, do you have a s3 repost option in your motherboard bios, try setting to high performance in Os too as that keeps the pciex lanes active(no power saving)

Ok max perf die 1650MHz, 900MHz hbm, 1000 mv, max draw 240W at worst.

Get AMD Link and put it on a Android or Apple Phone/Tablet have it running and then put the card under a stress Test/Game/Benchmark

Oh wait, try a a driver version that is older, 1 to 2 versions older from latest. 590s were locking up under DX12

Im on the latest drivers with vega, I've had no lock ups but tbh i have not ran a dx12 app since, good thinking ill try that.

Yes but i can't help wondering why and how precisely, as i said elsewhere seams to affect those using 650\ PSUs that really should be fine.

Whilst at the limits of a PSUs output as i have been a lot of times ,for example 1000watt psu running five GPUs or even 1200watt with five cards its very easy to replicate some if these issues (you have to tweak to not have these issues (low clocks and power sliderd)).

And I have had similar experiences with two cards and the wrong PSU for the job.

Over time a psu degrades, top notch stay pretty consistent over their life cycle, low end models fall off pretty quickly with current&voltage output...

I suspect it to be a cooler not making contact. Will send back to store and switch to something more suited to my current system (1070/TI?). Also have to mention it's the Gigabyte RX Vega 56 Gaming OC, got a good deal in South Africa.

Check temps then, typically hard locks are not enough power being supplied to card, or a bad driver. Try drivers that are 3 versions older than this current driver.

So I can report back on dx12 hard locks, not here ,it does not for me and I played a few hours of forza 4.

Reason saying is before this latest beta driver there were RX 590s locking up on dx12 on BF5, DX11 they weren't.
