Hello Everyone,
I am in the process of building a Ryzen 1700x workstation for data research (no gaming). I will using the following:
B350M motherboard
1700x processor (no overclocking)
32gb ddr4 3200 ram
512gb SSD Samasung
3TB HD
GTX 1050 2gb
Seasonic 620 watt PS
Urban S1 Case ( I already have the case)

The question I have is this, the case allows for 148mm of clearance for a for a cpu cooler. I have looked at the Noctua u9s and the Cryorig H5. Any ideas or recommendations?

The H7 and U9S are solid choices OP. I'd also recommend the Noctua C14S. You will probably need the AM4 mounting kit for the Noctua coolers though.

Also I think there is a newer Quad heatpipe variant of the Cryorig H7 which should improve performance a bit which might be worthwhile looking at too. It's also AM4 compatible out of the box too.

My issue is the 148mm height restriction, lol. I bought the case for the space where it is going, wont do that again.

This one fits, barely (by 6 mm) : http://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-c14s/specification

You can always change the fan to a thinner one: this cooler should be more then enough, even with a thinner fan.

There's also this smaller model: http://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-l12/specification

Both links i provided have the "socket compatibility" link right under "cooler specification": suggest you check your board 1st, just in case.

You'll have to get an AM4 mounting kit that you can either purchase or request for free (will take several days to arrive), following the steps described here.

I'm using a similar version of this cooler with my R5 1600 (older model): NH-C14. Used the stock cooler until i got the mounting kit and then swapped the stock cooler for the NH-C14: did get a huge scare when swapping the coolers, though!

Look at thermalright too.

The Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT is an insane cooler, it keeps beats the top dog noctua at a lower noise level and using a single fan. I just bought one for my upcoming Ryzen build.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Thermalright/Le_Grand_Macho/

Edit: You should check the clearances to see if it fits your board and memory. The Thermalright website has every possible cooler measurement that you'd want. My version came with the AM4 mounting hardware too.

You can also try a 120mm AIO. Less likelihood of clearance issues. Mine has left me very satisfied: silent and low temps. More than enough for it at stock with virtually no noise.

If you're not going to overclock, you may as well undervolt for lower temps and noise as well.

I don't know if Arctic are shipping the AM4 kit with new orders, but if you do take the plunge, you should send an email to Arctic and they'll send it to you (maybe a week).

To note: OP's case has a limited height, so big tower coolers are a no no for this reason. It's why i suggested lower height coolers to begin with!

Urban S1 Case ( I already have the case)
Other CPU cooler height limitation: 148mm
VGA length limitation: 260mm

Heatsink Specifications:
Dimension: L150mm x W120mm x H159mm (Fin Area only)
L150mm x W146.5mm x H159mm (Heat sink incl.)

Thank you for pointing this out, the TR Le Grand Macho RT is out of the equation, still an epic air cooler tho.

This link should list all AM4 compatible coolers for that case:

https://pcpartpicker.com/products/cpu-cooler/#sort=price&c=33

*Note- some coolers are AM4 ready out of the box but others may require kits from the manufacturer

My recommendation would be the Noctua NH-L9x65 SE-AM4 or the NH-U9 if you're not planning any major overclocking

I don't know if it will fit but the scythe fuma is a very solid air cooler, worth checking out.

Otherwise like a 120 or 140mm aio might suit you quite well.

Well I narrowed it down to the Noctua NH-L9x65 SE AM4 or NH-L12. Really like the Noctua mounting system. Thanks for all of the input.
