How is it worse than this, where cleaning can destroy a resistor?

If you dont use insane amounts of paste, you'll never have a problem.
It looks like its going to be super easy to just wipe it out with a cotton bud, called a Q-tip by people who don't drink tea.

Use the spread method, and you'll be problem free.

Q-tip is *one* brand name for them.
It's so very odd when places (countries etc) start calling a product by one brands name, there are still people who call every phone an iphone, and every mp3 player an ipod... it gets weird.

Anyway, this shouldnt be an issue - even with coolers and their bodgy stock paste applications, they're always thin layers. It'll be weird but not too bad, and people using conductive TIM's can always use varnish on those little resistors or whatever they are

Really though, unless using drastic amounts of conductive pastes, it shouldn't be an issue - and if you are doing that you should know enough to seal the edges. If it comes to that, Alder Lake also has exposed pads/SMDs around the edges of the IHS. Click to enlarge.

Q-tips are American only, I had to include that brand name as it always devolves into... well, this conversation, if I don't.

The only paste thats fun to clean up is liquid metal, as that usually involves sanding

An on topic thought is, even if paste ends up in those gaps... who cares? It won't affect performance in any way, we can ignore it. We might even get fancy coolers or waterblocks that fit perfectly around them for some bizarre reason like lego clicking together

Just use q-tips carefully if you want to get the remains away. Personally I don't clean GPUs (where there are SMDs like @Mussels said) that perfectly, I just make sure that the die is clean.

OCD person yes. But the IHS is fairly thick, so lets hope the TIM just barely goes over the edge. Being forced to go in every one of those violin cutouts to make them perfectly clean would drive me mad. Or maybe I get addicted doing it who knows. it would be a waste of time if it takes too long.
