What I find worrying, as we get closer is that the Rhetoric in some circles is already moving from terms like "class (and/or performance) leading" to things like "best performance per dollar", now I may be reading far too much into that or of course interpreting it wrongly but it is starting to sniff a bit like Bulldozer...... I hope not.

That rhetoric was always present except for pure PR displays about the product-to-be, imo.
On the other hand, AMD heads-of-state did claim, after piledriver, that the efforts wouldn't go to create a performance king but the best performance/price ratio and that it would mean they would try to undermine Intel in the market levels where prices aren't high, where most of the volume is anyways...in their financial restructuring, this would make sense, which would be to attack where most of the consumption is, not where the highest cut is made.
So after that one, my hype levels went null and no news after that changed it. But that's me though. :)
Their marketing department haven't got the memo, I bet, so they're jet-fueling the hype-train again...

EDIT: I'm actually happy if I can have 16 threads for less than a whole computer, modern OSs know how to use them well :D

Are there posts where you didn´t troll? :roll:My gut feeling is the opposite - I think they will deliver this time...

Honestly, I don't have much faith in AMD anymore. It's not really their hardware either. Even if it's not quite as powerful as the competition, it's usually better performance for dollar. No, it's their crap software instead.

If it's not the latest Crimson drivers being void of scaling options, it's the Radeon Additional Settings not even launching anymore. I'd assumed the last two builds of their drivers generating an error with Radeon Settings may have been a bad driver install, but then I read this in the release notes...

  • Radeon Settings may not load on system boot for some system configurations.
Thread about it on AMD support forum: https://community.amd.com/thread/208965
Notice it's not been answered by AMD staff either.

^This was claimed to be a "fixed issue" even with 16.12.2 Optional, the one before the recent 16.12.2 WHQL, but as verified by the thread, it's still an issue even with 16.12.2 WHQL.

Then you have the fact that ReLive hotkeys don't work worth a damn. I always have to bring the toolbar onscreen and click to save a replay. ReLive won't work at all in Doom 2016, but ShadowPlay has no problem with it. Their Frame Rate Target Control does nothing to cap FPS either.

I see now they have a 17.1.1 Optional driver, right after the 16.12.2 WHQL release. It primarily adds support for RE7. I really don't know anymore whether to bother trying their new drivers, or just ignore them.

It's clear to me "some system configurations" means don't expect their software to work with their older GPUs. Lately though, I'm finding even a lot of people with their newer hardware can't get a lot of their software features to work.

The bottom line is, no matter how good the hardware, it has to have proper software support, and that's where AMD has lost my faith. I just don't trust them anymore. This buzz they're spinning about Zen, especially claiming it will beat Intel, reminds me a lot of that crazy campaign between Clinton and Trump. If there were any truth to it they'd be saying it at least after review samples are sent out, instead of trying to influence the public before reviewers can even verify it.

Ya there's definitely a few issues, but overall I'd say that Crimson has fared quite a bit better driver-wise than what we had before it. At least in my experiences with AMD cards which is becoming a lower count these days...have all taken very well to Crimson drivers. Actually I'm quite impressed with their offering becoming more competitive on on my systems it has been very stable. I'm sure the kinks will get sorted out. NV really hasn't been the best in the driver and software with driver game either, both could take a few lessons from more bug testing and QA before releasing.

Like bulldozer I'd expect OS changes to be required personally to make the most of the platform plus decent driver's so I think it could go like before but I'm optimistic still.

Exactly it's not no proof just little.

Wow the hater's are having a party in this thread.

Probably because I am posting here :D Hoping there will be a selection of Matx AM4 boards at release, was going to build a tidy little rig with a 7600K but decided to wait a few weeks to see what AMD brings to the shop shelves.

I was going to build a secondary rendering rig based on ES Xeon (10+ cores at 2ghz) but decided to hold out for whatever AMD might bring in. I haven't built an AMD rig since AMD's 4x4 platform.

I am - cautiously - optimistic, partly because it will be rendering Blender scenes.

My guess the ipc will be alright at about Broadwell/haswell level, but the deciding factor then will be clocks. How high will it clock? That will decide the whole "who is faster" thing. Funny enough, amd didn't had problems with clocks for many years, it's kinda surprising me now that it's a topic again, like in phenom (II) times.

Well, I sure hope it won't end up like Phenom.
I was one the victims of early Phenom II it barely could overclock to 3.8ghz, a Phenom II 940 first batch. The 14nm node had its problems on the gpus, now I hope and as I see the Gpus are clocking somewhat higher now, I hope it's mature enough for the cpus to at least hit 4.5 ghz with some effort.

I believe with the previous BD fiasco they already know if this flops there will be literal hell to pay. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to get one of these when they come out and probrably won't be for sometime at least.
I'll have to keep rocking my FX-8300 CHV-Z setup until I'm finally able to make the jump but should be good until then so.... You guys either enjoy or hate it, however it goes with this launch is all I can say. :toast:

Didn't AMD have Jim K look at the dozer chip to see if anything could be done and after all his testing and poking around with the chip he said junk it and let's start from the ground up?

I personally believe all the negative comments towards The ryzen chip is the ones afraid that AMD just may have done it this time? Personally I hope ryzen hammers the shit outta Intel :p

Anyways that's my thoughts and as for being ready, umm hell yeah... Already have the cash set aside for this new system.

I think some people are just negative, not anti AMD or so. But even that'd be somewhat justified as AMD has let down people again and again in the past.

Nobody is afraid AMD may have got it right. Unless you're heavily invested in Intel. I think it's genuine concern that people (myself included) are hoping for something great but are getting jitters that it won't match AMD's own blender hype.

the Rhetoric in some circles is already moving from terms like "class (and/or performance) leading" to things like "best performance per dollar"
Nothing wrong with "best performance per dollar" when it's obvious it's not gonna lead - one cherry picked blender benchmark where they matched intel's offering at $1k suggests it's gonna be somewhat slower in all other benchmarks.
It really needs to be only competitive enough for "best performance per dollar" rhetoric to make any sense (which was not case with bulldozer)
