A 2200G for 80 bucks is quite normal isn't it? I paid 80-some for mine a year ago, and its up here at 85 eur right now.

Here's the price stat for my country (NL) (just for some insights)

I don't know. 1900X is way too slow in both productivity and gaming to be even considered these days. 1950X at this price yeah at least it will have 16 cores and quad channel. With just 8 cores 1900X is in a really awkward position.

If someone came to me and asked for a system whether bare bones or high end I could not look past the deals that can be had for some AMD processors. I can't believe the 1900X is cheaper than the 1800X. A 2920X for $375 is ridiculous value for money. I don't believe there is a processor better in value than that right now.

Umh I had the 1900X and it is faster than the 1800, 1900 and 2700X according to my own testing and none of those chips are slouches in what you reference. There is no need for Quad channel and X399 will boot with 1 stick of RAM just fine, If you really think about it it is in a good awkward position as the next consoles will have 8 cores /16 threads based on Ryzen.

Precisely - considering the cost of the rest of the platform, 1900X isn't even worth that much to be honest...

For an entry level render-type workstation, but for a more general purpose one - not so much...

X399 mobo are quite costly. Also to take advantage of X399 you need quad channel DRAM kit. That adds up cost fast.

1900X was weird even during launch, as at that time 1700X/1800X were already better value.

Honestly 1900X feels to me is just AMD trying their best to salvage all usable parts. For a HEDT platform it is really bad value. Same as those quad core CPUs on the X299 platform: very stupid

yeah a 2700 and a cheap as dirt b450 board at 4.0 ghz (which is easy) will net you the same if not better performance than the 1900x.

Might be a good chip if the new TRs are backwards comptible with that socket. Just get that as a cheap hold over until you can slot a 32 core behemoth in there.

Supposedly the 1920X was on sale at Amazon for $200 but it must of sold out already.

GIGABYTE X399 AORUS PRO dropped to $262.96 on Sept. 1st

First gen X399 board probably don't have enough VRM to handle Zen2 TR

$200 for 1950X would be good value. 3900X and a good B450 mobo still runs cheaper AND faster than 1920X

That's so unfortunate. I feel for the TR people...

Although they should have enough VRM to at least handle the 16 core version, no?

Nobody knows for sure. ASUS had to come out with a separate VRM cooling module during Threadripper 2 launch for their 1st gen TR board.

Having used both 1st gen TR and 2nd gen TR quite extensively, I will admit the 1st gen TR platform feels a bit half baked. 2nd gen TR and TR mobo definitely feels better, but still not at Intel's HEDT quality. Don't get me wrong I LOVE all the high speed cores. There just seems to be a lot of small quirks that such an expensive platform should not have, i.e: not polished enough.

I will be reading TR3 reviews carefully before making a jump onto TR3 as my home platform.

If you compare them to X470 no doubt. There is no need to use Quad channel RAM for X399; Yes it does support it but it is not a requirement. I agree that the 1700/1800 were a better value but it depends on what you want. If you just want a computer I agree with phanbuey that a B450 and 2700X would be good. The 1900X was for users like me that want as many expansion slots as possible, I like to compare X399 to X570 in terms of cost/value. When I look at that I get things like this.

1. On X570 even though you get 3 NVME drives the bottom 2 are wired to the chipset.
2. On X570 if you populate 2 PCI_E 16 slots the 3rd one will run at 0
3. On X570 if you use 4 sticks of RAM they run dual channel

1. On X399 all of the expansion slos are wired to the CPU
2. On X399 you get a minimum of 3 X16 slots all wired as such (mostly 16*8*16*8 across 4 slots)
3. On X399 if you use 4 sticks of RAM they run Quad channel

Then I look at cost. The chepaest X399 board:

vs X570 from the same vendor

https://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-ALC...?keywords=Gigabyte+X570&qid=1568639161&sr=8-4

The 1900 does look pale in comparison to it's big brothers (1920,2920,2950,2970,2990) but it is by no means a weak CPU. A first gen Ryzen chip that can OC to 4.1 across all cores at 1.325 volts is no slouch. It may indeed be salvaged parts but let's remember Dr Su said that TR4 would be the top 5% binned Ryzen chips.

First gen X399 board probably don't have enough VRM to handle Zen2 TR

$200 for 1950X would be good value. 3900X and a good B450 mobo still runs cheaper AND faster than 1920X

The 3900X is faster but in no way cheaper than the 1920. In Canada the 3900X is currently 3 times the cost of the 1920X. Using that I would pay almost $1000 for the chip and between 100 to 150 for the B450 board.

$1121.78

vs

$792.98

If I am in the market I would always buy the latest for the sake of a bit longer product support (UEFI updates, security patches, PCIE Gen4 and etc.), not some 2 generation old discount stuff. But that is just me. So you do you!

Socket TR4 is still going to get TR 3 after all. Whether PCIe 4 is a must have though is up to those already on X399. I do know no one is trying to rattle the tiger cage for a unsavory response.

Yeah, AMD is cheaper for a reason; I know quite a couple of people who went from older Intel HEDT platforms (mostly X79, one still had x58 before) to TR4 and are by now either back on Intel or are currently begrudgingly biting the bullet...

To me it felt like the MoBo makers did not have enough confidence in the TR platform as Intel's HEDT true competition. The mobo built quality improvement from TR1 to TR2 was pretty big. I can only hope by 3rd gen TR the MoBo makers actually spend sometime to polish their product. And as much as I hate ASUS's customer service, I will probably go with ASUS's ROG line for 3rd gen TR.

Not bad for a HEDT entry level CPU, at least that gives all the benefits TR4 has vs AM4.
