The S27 and its little brothers had quite a nice feature set. Been looking for a review of the 400 series for a while as well though. Can't find any decent ones, W1z even mailed an S3 contact for me, no response.
I guess now that there is stock reviews should appear.

I think they're a little edgy with circulating review samples. There weren't too many reviews for the S27.

It is not meant for gaming. It's a low end low power card with hardware acceleration for many videocodecs and the likes. ie it's suitable for media centers and the likes.

I know thats why I said I would buy one if they were available where I live.
I was commenting on how it looks not it's purpose.
I need one for the leftover components I have to build another PC for videos, apps etc.
I could see from the benchmark this card is not going to run Crysis although the link does state it can play games.

this is very intresting if you look at the second or third page of that chinese reveiw the S3 is going to have independent shaders unlike ATI which doesnt...so i wonder if it will be possible like nvidia to OC the shaders independent of the core....hat would be amazing seeing as nvidias arch boosts insane performance gains when the shaders are oc'd

Making that money with those cheap cards, that everyone and their mother buys. Simply because they don't know any better, and don't want to speed the money on cards that are 100USD or more.

Someone tells them you need a video card, and they look for a good deal.

my guress is the company is prob kinda poor but at thisr ate seeing the performance ofmthis card...in a few years when they start making high end cards nvidia and ATI better watch themselves.

S3 would make more money selling these ~$70 cards than rushing into the high-end segment...which would require tons of money invested in the R&D, initial production and distribution. But yes, the company has the potential. While it would be a little unknown to the west, VIA has made lots mot money selling inexpensive chipset, the order here is: "Have Celeron/Sempron, buy VIA chipset based boards".

All in all, if the company can master selling to one segment of the market, it can survive and grow. The S3 Chrome S27 was a nice product, just that it wasn't properly marketed/sold...it at least translated its paper specs to real performance better than an ATI card of its segment did at its time.

They do sound like a excellent replacement for crappy on board. Perhaps a comparison to some of the newer ATI onboard offerings would be nice.

The cool thing about this is, it probly uses even less power than the above cards mentioned.

EDIT: I really hope S3 can get into the swing of things, it would be pretty nice, and cool might I add, to see a 3rd major chipset company for video cards.

I was saying this on another forum to some mates, and they were not convinced. Personally im always for the underdog, because even the big boys have to worry about them some day. If they can pick up some momentum as mentioned, then they will perhaps have some good performance cards for us games to pick from. It can only lead to more bang for buck for us if they get the big 2 worried

At last - this took some sweet time though.
S27 was originally supposed to come ~18 months ago. I wonder if Chrome D3 (1.2GHz/65nm/DX10/GDDR4, 128bit/Chromation4.5/PCIe) let alone E1 (1.2+GHz/65nm/DX10.1/GDDR5, 512bit/Chromation5/PCIe2.0) will ever see daylight.

Seems it's OpenGL driver isn't too optimised (like the Chrome S20 series). Not that it matters too much since even ID is going to switch over to DirectX.
But it's performance in Crysis is really great.
