I just completed my build and I currently have an ASUS Strix 1060 in there right now. The wife just gave me the greenlight to add 2 more monitors to my setup so I was going to return the 1060 and get an EVGA 1080 (still undecided on brand) to future-proof me more. I have a G2 550W PSU and according to Outervison, I have enough power for the 1080 and that's with me rounding overclocks up on the calculator etc. Am I safe with just the 550W?

I only plan to get my CPU to 4.5GHz and will probably not touch the 1080 much at all, but put 4.7GHz and 1822MHz in the calculator to play it safe.

GTX 1080 Ti is out soon so you may want to hang fire and compare prices.

I was thinking about that too. I'm already stretching the budget with the 1080 and I personally think it's already complete overkill for me, but the wife gave me the thumbs up so I won't complain.

I'm in the same camp regarding the wife's permission ;)

Regarding brand, I tend to stick with EVGA as they've been rock solid performers and have never let me down.
Their RMA and customer support is also 1st class in my experience.

Except that their 1080s try to set your house on fire.
I'm speaking from personal experience, they do have a relatively painless RMA.

Do they run hot or something? I did read their first 1080s ran hot but those issues were fixed. I know you can't believe everything on the internet though.

Yeah I heard. That's why I didn't buy a 1080 at all.
I'll see what the 1080 Ti benches are like and make a decision....As long as they don't catch fire too.

A GTX 780 that failed from the gate. They wanted me to pay return shipping. I told them they can shove the card and sent it back to the retailer for a full refund
A GTX 960 with artifacts, RMA (they paid the shipping)
And then a B500 Power supply that failed and took 4 weeks to get another. The replacement was fine
All this was within a year or two so I haven't got to a place where I'm wiling to give them a chance yet
So I just realized there is a reason they are the cheapest

Would my 550W G2 be enough for the EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Superclocked with all my other components? Newegg site is telling me 596W while Outervision is saying just under 500W with overclocks.

I would think the G2 550w would be fine for a single GTX 1080

That calculator/meter just recommends everything higher than 600W.

They always do, its just a safe precaution and the G2 is a solid Power supply

Now if you had a AMD FX 8350 CPU I would say 600+

That's pretty bad for EVGA.
I've not had RMA issues with them personally. The only problem I had was with Asus, never again. (4 years and counting)

I have read that ASUS has TERRIBLE RMA/customer service, which is why I'm not replacing my STRIX 1060 with a STRIX 1080. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the SC and not the FTW card. I'll save $20 and from what I can tell, the only difference is a +13MHz factory clock.

They bring a new meaning to crappy customer service. I will NEVER buy any of their products again.
Gainward also lost my custom a few years back because of a rude and obnoxious reply to a simple RMA request.

They run fine, until they very suddenly don't. Then they try to catch fire. That's my expurience anyway.

Avoid the EVGA FTW's. The SC edition doesn't have the VRM issue, but still has relatively high VRM temps. The only reason it lacks the problem the FTW has, is because it has less board power (and will therefore clock lower, also they're not good binned GPUs like the FTW). In all honesty, I wouldn't trust the SC either for long term. I returned my 1070 FTW because I didn't trust it to last.

Get MSI Gaming X, Asus Strix OC, Gigabyte, (watch the OC version, you need this, or it will lock at lower clocks), Gainward or Palit.

The last two of that list are the most cost effective ones, and also the ones reporting the least issues across the board.

Palit, MSI and Asus have the best temps (also on VRM). Palit's usually the cheaper option, and doesn't limit your card in any way. Decent binning, good cooling and enough power to push a decent OC.

The GTX 1xxx Gigabyte cards had fan problems, you can find threads about it here.

Don't know if it has been 100% solved now.
