Samsung gets 128 GB SSDs into Production

The Korean semiconductor giant says that it will begin mass-producing 1.8" and 2.5" Solid-state drives (SSDs) for use by the mobile-computing industry. With the scale at which Samsung claim they're producing these parts, they hope to sell the parts at very competitive prices. This indicates a full-on reach of the SSD into consumer strata and of SSD becomming mainstream.

The Multi-Level Cell (MLC) drives slated for production feature 70 MB/s of write and 90 MB/s of read speeds, that's below what a single level cell (SLC) drive can offer, read speeds of 130 MB/s, an important specification to look out for when in the market for an SSD.

Samsung claims that the 128 GB SSD, which is built from 64 MLC NAND flash memory chips of 16 Gb (2 GB) each, is energy efficient at 0.2 W in standby mode and 0.5 W in active mode. Samsung claims the drive's expected life to be over 20 times that of conventional drives....80~100 years if a conventional drive lasts 5 years.

I want one lol. The HDD is one component that is overlooked for PC silencers a lot of the time. (Okay i cant hear my HDD but yeah...). Godsend for cable management too... they are so tiny, that i'd put them behind the motherboard tray

I would put one in my laptop, and get (almost) instant boot!
However, they will probably cost as much as a new laptop anyway...

speaking of laptops....

didnt they had a post on here not long ago stating SSD energy efficiency for laptops was actually a lie?? I think it said it takes upto 5% more power then a standard sata/ide drive....

I would love to replace my aging HD in my computer with 3 - 4 128gb SSDs. But these are gonna be like those transcend ones... really cheap, but really slow transfer rates. I don't believe their numbers.

yeah, it was actually saying that in some cases the difference was 28 hours of battery life... So yeah, not good for laptops, great for HTPCs.

Oh for the love of god..
We need someone with an especially loud voice to go up to SDD manufacturers and yell into their ears "MAKE 3.5" SSD'S - NAO!!". Maybe then they'll get the hint.

those were older models, and not samsungs. these samsungs have 0.5W usage, compare that with the numbers in the toms article and you'll find those drives were higher usage to begin with.

Also dont forget, you cant MOVE a laptop when running with a mechanical drive without risking toatsing the drive - SSD's you can spin in circles while jumping up and down with no ill effects
