So i was given a free precision T3600 with a xeon E5-1620 3.6ghz turbo to 3.9, it's a fine chip seems to do better than my i7 870 that wont overclock. My question is though, should i spend the 60-80 bucks to get a 6core or 8 core cpu for it. I can get the xeon e5-2660 for 75

I dont think you can OC on that mobo so in that case for you don't matter if is it Xeon 16xx(unlocked) Series or 26xx(locked) series this is supported CPU's from their list but in theory that mobo have C600 Intel chipset so maybe even this CPU's should work with updated bios....You should check forums and people experiences&opinions first, personally If it works then I will go with V2 series as it is newer and a bit faster....I am rocking atm 2650 V2 that I OC via BCLK so it's working great on 3,4Ghz all cores and turbo on 3,84 but my mobo is X79 Sabertooth so that is a bit different story....

Dell never added me8 for ib-e support, I'd have to buy a t3610 board which I really don't want to

Look at the 2687w. The higher clocks would help over a 2660. V2 if you can.

No v2 chips, v2 requires I replace the board for a t3610 board, if I do that I'm just going to buy one of those chineses x79 boards lol

LTT did a thing about those X79 boards. Was tempted to nab one to get a standard sized board for my stuff but I'll drill one more hole to properly fit my board. I'm just lazy.

I would still be looking at a 2687w. What you have now would overclock oh so good but you're board limited. Maybe see if eBay has a decent board?

You are correct, T3600 only supports SNB-E, T3610 supports IVB-E. SNB-E 16xx series all come with unlocked multi but max 6c/12t. Your 4c/8t 1620 should overclock via Throttlestop/Intel XTU. For 8c/12t, you'll need a 26xx series & these are locked. X79 really deserves IVB-E 1680 V2 @ 4GHz all core. At that point you need another mb, so may not be worth it unless free or very cheap.

I just bought a 15 core CPU for 19.99 + 5 dollars tax. Xeon Intel, upgrading from my Xeon 5670, should be here monday. I wouldn't spend 60 or 80 bucks if you don't have too. Ebay is your friend.
I bought a desktop with it, it's a HP Z420 Workstation Intel Xeon E5-1607 V2 3.00ghz.

First off, your 5670 is a 6 core/12 thread, not 15 cores.

Your 5670 is socket 1366, not OP's socket 2011.

E5-1607v2 is a 4c/8t which would fair equal or worse than what OP has now. OP can't do V2 chips as already stated.

Interesting, I never know they make an odd number core Xeon. Which CPU model is that?

There are a couple 15 core xeons but Xeon IVB-E, they wouldn't work on OP's board. Just for example: e7-4880 v2 and E7-8890 v2

v2 would be IVB-E, but he is limited to SB-E ("v1")

Yes, a E5-1650 or E5-1660 would be excellent upgrades. Everything else for that motherboard will not give you the best balance of speed+cores.

E5-1650
$50
or
$50

E5-1660
$68.50
or
$75

All of the above sellers are top rated.

Here is a list of Sandy Bridge EP

If the E5-2687W works with it, 8 core with 3.8 turbo would be a good deal as they are $85 on eBay.

However, that CPU is a 150W TDP part which exceeds the spec for the motherboard in question. Bad idea for that board. Good idea for a non-OEM board based system. ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, AsRock, etc. could handle that CPU like champs as well as any board for OEM's specifically designed for it.

IMHO, the 6 core Xeon's I listed above will provide the best bang for buck while staying within the specs of the supporting system.

There is no 15 core for 1366 or 2011. The highest in the 2600v2 series is a 12 core. Highest for 2600v1 is 8 core.

Source: I'm running a system that can take those chips. I'll even provide links if you need.

I wanna know what this "15 core" is.

There is no 15 core for 1366 or 2011. The highest in the 2600v2 series is a 12 core. Highest for 2600v1 is 8 core.

Source: I'm running a system that can take those chips. I'll even provide links if you need.

I wanna know what this "15 core" is.

There are a couple 15 core xeons but Xeon IVB-E, they wouldn't work on OP's board. Just for example: e7-4880 v2 and E7-8890 v2

v2 would be IVB-E, but he is limited to SB-E ("v1")

Still waiting to hear from the person which socket LGA 1366 15-core Xeon it was.

Are those 2011 strictly pairing with the same boards as the 2600 or 2011-v3? On mobile at the moment.
