Hello, guys. I really need your help with the next problem:
Mainboard: tomahawk b550
Processor: amd ryzen 7 3700x
New graphic card installation: amd sapphire hd6990
The problem is on the mainboard i see a red led next to "vga" and it doesn t boot, so i have absolutely no image and no way togo to bios unless i place back the old graphic card. I heard i shoul do something in bios or i should mod it and than flash it ito the card. Any sugestions are highly appreciated

First, how did you obtain the card? Have you tried it in a older machine?

Have you enabled CSM on the motherboard???

The HD 6990 is an ancient graphics card and predates UEFI by a few years, so it doesn't have a compatible VBIOS. Enable CSM/BIOS emulation in your UEFI settings using another graphics card if possible, though CSM should auto-enable once the motherboard detects a non-compliant graphics card (my B550-E detects my old Quadro FX 5600 without failure). Also check if the card is getting enough power, that is a very hungry model.

Yeah CSM should handle the card without going through crazy bios flashes

I wonder if it is some sort of oddity arising from the fact that it is a dual-core GPU, or maybe it's just a seating problem, are you able to try another slot in your PC? I have no idea why would it not boot if the PC has CSM enabled and the GPU works on another system. :s

Try forcing PCI-E to 2.0, some Nvidia cards have issues similar to that

Go to your friends and try the card there, if it boots then your motherboard is not compatible with the card

Get all sticker pics from the card please

Though it is ancient the 6990 came out in 2011, uefi came out in 2006. I had to look this up because I had a 5870 with a UEFI mobo new back then. So there was no way a card released later could possibly predate UEFI.

If OP goes to the "friend's" place to "test" the GPU, it definitely won't work.

No. The UEFI I refer to is the modern computer BIOS. The first GPUs that received a UEFI GOP VBIOS update were the GTX 600 series (Kepler) which are one generation newer than the HD 6000/GTX 500 series, in fact, the GTX 600 series launched in 2012 without UEFI GOP support and require a BIOS update in order to be compliant with the modern standard.

Modern UEFI BIOS began appearing in desktop PCs circa 2011-2012, about 10 years ago. From that time period, only the latest wave of LGA1155 and AM3+ motherboards support it, anything earlier doesn't. Some high end motherboards at the time still intentionally opted for a legacy BIOS (for example Gigabyte Z68X-UD7-B3), arguably for being more predictable back then. You will only really get solid UEFI support throughout all tiers of consumer hardware beginning with the Haswell generation (2013 4th gen Intel processors).

If you open GPU-Z it will say if your video card is compatible or not:

It was a really big deal at the time for BIOS to move over to UEFI via updates - just because it first came out in ~2012, doesnt mean it was even remotely common back then

I dont think i saw UEFI as a stock BIOS option til haswell/4th gen intel in ~15, before then it was all over the place
