I received my new(well, refurbed) graphics card from Newegg today...and this card is chattering(almost sounds like chipset noise I've heard on some Intel motherboards) away like nobody's business. It might be coil whine, which I've never heard before so I'm just guessing. The noise is happening at idle and only worsens a smidgeon when I enter into a video game. It doesn't matter what game, it happens with all of them. Considering my pc is dead quiet and I have excellent hearing...it would probably drive me crazy within 24 hours.

Any ideas as to what to do here? If I return it to Newegg, they can't send a replacement because it's a refurb...and they're out of stock. Can I ship it off to Sapphire? There's supposed to be a manufacturer's warranty for 90 days on this card. Is something like this covered under warranty?

I really don't want to return it. It's very hard to find these RX 460 Nitro's...especially for 59 bucks! Plus...for me...the card is perfect.

In short...absolutely love the card. Hate the noise....what should I do?

Appreciate any help...:),

Definitely sounds like coil whine, have you had a go at undervolting it, try n get max clock with the least power , that should help reduce it if it works.
After this Rma or physical strip down photo time dude imho.

wouldnt hurt to contact them, my RX 480 wouldnt maintain clocks within 2 weeks of purchasing it, sent an email and they had me send the card in. I find sapphires warranty to be decent but the time it takes to get the card to them, fix it and get back to me was almost 6 weeks (had a HD 6870 during that time >_< )

Thanks for the replies,

I usually buy used graphics cards...so dealing with any of these companies is something I haven't done in years. If I have to wait six weeks...that is fine. I just wasn't sure if "chattering" is a valid reason for an RMA. If it is coil whine, am I going to be hassled for trying to RMA the card? Like I said in my original post...I'd prefer not to give the card back and take the cash.

I only purchased this card as a temporary solution, I didn't want to buy anything substantial until AMD made their supposed up and coming announcement, but I was hoping it would get me well in to the winter. I've been wanting to play Witcher III...and I'm not the paranoid type...but I'm beginning to believe there is a conspiracy against me doing so. :).

I'd just tell them you are unsatisfied with the coil whine of the refurbed unit sent to you and you would like to refund. I'd wash your hands clean of it and just be patient. It sounds like a graphics card is a long term purchase for you. If nothing else, just save up for a used rx 580 on the forums here or elsewhere

I sat, had a cup of tea and thought about it for awhile. I think I'm going to just take lynx29's advice and return the card to Newegg. With my life(aka health), I prefer/have to keep things as simple as possible. I guess this is the good thing about having an APU, I can fall back on that and just wait.

I've tried a used Sapphire Nitro RX 480, now a refurbed Sapphire Nitro RX 460. I think I'm going to patiently stash my cash and wait until AMD announces something that seems appetizing. I'd prefer to just wait on a new card. It's been 5 years since I've been able to purchase one. A few more months aren't going to kill me(fingers crossed...:)).

To end all of this on a positive note. At least tux was able to reclaim his perch...:)

I think you should do some research before buy a device with that kind of characteristics. Sometimes it's hard to choose.
