I have a "refurbished" Sapphire R9 285, that I bought off eBay.

(OK, if you want to lecture me on being stupid...you can skip this thread. Thanks!)

I installed it in my ASUS Sabertooth 990FX / AMD-FX8300 system last night and....NADA...no BIOS message, no display output on HDMI, DVI OR Displayport (tried all three).

So I don't think this is a Windows Driver thing....we aren't even getting a BIOS screen before it attempts to boot.

Now this system has been working fine with a Sapphire HD7750 card, which I removed before I installed the R9 285.

The R9 285 appears to be powering up...the fans are spinning, the Sapphire LED is lit....but no output.

I am using an Antec 550 watt supply (aka Seasonic G series) with the necessary dual six-pin PCIe cable installed and connected to the card.

Any ideas from the gang on how to proceed?

Tried the BIOS switch in both positions.

No response either way.

This wasnt in a Dell. Have only tried it in the Asus Sabertooth 990FX MB (which is UEFI) So I need to get a different system to check it out and see what happens

Yes i read you tried it in your Sabertooth
the Reason i said try it in another System (but not your dell) is there seems to be Compatibility problems with those Dells and later AMD Cards.

If it Fails in another System return to Ebay Seller for refund

Sabertooth is a very renouned board, make sure legacy stuff is enabled on it, plus bios update to 2501 or 2901, I never had a problem with a Sapphire r9 290 vapor x or a xfx r7 250X

System works with HD7750
Testing with both may bring about power supply issues
Antec 550 watt supply (aka Seasonic G series) with the necessary dual six-pin PCIe cable

It comes down to did the card arrive DOA
only testing in another system can clarify that.

Tested in three known good systems with adequate power supplies. Can’t get a video output, not even an error message, on any of the three. So, I requested a return from the eBay seller and sending it back. Appreciate the advice, thanks!

Well the seller didnt argue about the board and refunded me, so I have no complaints against them. Just bummed it didnt work. I have bought refurbished Sapphire products before and they worked fine. Sapphire seems like a quality AIB maker.

They are but in this instance the board was never tested before it arrived to you.

If you look at my specs you see my board of choice. XFX is my second choice.

. Thanks for the advice. Didn’t realize you had a Sapphire. :)

So I better go back and double check my BIOSrev. I know that I turned on the CSM and thought I had the legacy all enabled. The system just went into a “loop” mode...never finishing POST and then powering itself off/on.

I could be wrong here as I haven't checked, but I thought the R9 285 was a proprietary card for one of the large manufacturers like Dell or H.P.

The R9 285 came out after most of the R9 200 series. Its a GCN third gen and it was upgraded to the R9 380 when the 300 series arrived.

Follow up...I got a full refund from the seller for the defective R9 285.

Based on my tests and the advice here, I had the confidence to determine the card was DOA.

I ordered a Sapphire R9 380X, 4GB “Nitro”. It is working fine so far.

Thanks for all the help!

Do us a favor and save a uefi and csm copy of your bios and attach the sku number to the file itself and If there is any other info from white stickers please add it to the file other than serial number and upload it here. Glad it works now.

An update, the Sapphire R9 380x Nitro booted fine in my Dell T5500 motherboard.

I am using the latest Dell BIOS and the Sapphire is in legacy mode.
