Sata DVD drive wont detect in XP

My dad got a new Sata DVD burner and it came in today. I plugged it all in and the drive gets power as I can open the drive via the button on the front. However, it is not being detected in My Computer. I have never dealt with a DVD drive of this interface before and would appreciate some help.

I dont see why I would need a Sata driver as the Sata hdd works just fine. I really dont want to have to reinstall the OS again as I just finished almost 12 hrs ago.

so heres what happened. i knew i plugged it in so in the mist of rearragning the cables, i must have knocked it loose and it came unplugged. i went in the bios to try ide compatibility mode and noticed that it wasnt anywhere to be found in the bios. took the side panel off and low and behold the sata cable was unplugged. XD

oh well. thanks for the suggestions though guys.

You will either have to enable IDE compatability mode in the BIOS, or install the low level AHCI driver from your motherboards CD-ROM to some other media.




Why did you get a SATA drive is the only question I have, SATA offers NO improvement over IDE other than a slightly smaller cable, plus a multitude of other problems, for instance, unless you slipstream the driver or choose compatability mode you will not be able to acces your CD-ROM from the recovery console. It might not appear in the safe mode, and other bootable media will never work unless you use compatability mode, and that renders the benefits (none) of SATA over IDE.

Dont get so quick to shoot it down. Im not the one who bought it. My dad did. And aside from it having no real advantages other than a thinner cable, I agree. However, In my case, I would rather ditch IDE all together. Since every OS from here on out (including Vista but excluding XP and blow) Im not all that worried about it since they will have integrated SATA support. Hell even in XP, I never installed a SATA driver. I didnt in this case either, just plug n play. Once I get a new motherboard that has 8 SATA channels, I will slowly be making the transition to all sata.

And from what you say about SATA and IDE compatibility mode which "renders the benefits (none) of SATA over IDE" then there really isnt anything to complain about. Because if you had it in IDE mode, Im not losing performance or anything anywhere since there is no gain to that over SATA opticals. And besides, even if I cant get it to read to install windows or in safe mode, I still have one IDE CD-ROM installed.

But other than that, I stated that I had the issue figured out. I dont know if you had already typed all this out and posted after I stated which, but whichever.
