I have an HP Scanjet 2100C which I hadn't used for years, but used to work perfectly.

I powered it up, couldn't find a driver for it so I installed a demo program called VueScan.

The scanner worked, and I uploaded photos on my drive etc...

Now some 10 days later it gives me the message "USB device malfunctioning" and doesn't respond at all.

Has the scanner gone kaput? Or is it because I'm running off a demo program (which still works by the way)?

Did you check if there is a Windows 7 driver available thru Windows update?

Yeah, no basic Windows 7 drivers at least? Although it's both a printer and a scanner, I didn't install any drivers from HP. I just let Windows 7 get some basic drivers from me. So at least I can print with the printer through any program, and I go to "Devices and Printers" and use "Scan" there instead of pressing the "Scan" button in the printer-scanner itself (which would require the drivers from HP).

The problem is that when I connect it I get these:

Can I install drivers for it if Windows doesn't have a clue on what it is?

Yep. That is how Windows works with my Visioneering (junk) scanner. Just install the drivers and give it a try. You may need to install the driver using the "compatibility" mode as well.

It used to work some days ago with VueScan. Now when I open VueScan I get this message:

    And...

Maybe there's just something wrong with the scanner's USB cable itself.
