Screen going black.. graphics card dying?

Hi all, been a while since i last posted.

For the past 2-3 weeks the my pc screen has been going black for no reason, during playing old games like Dark Crusade, which my current 4870 should not be overheating on, and also just now ive been watching monsters inc and the screen has just gone black, but you can still hear the movie\game still playing in the background,

anyone know what the problem is?

im running ATi 10.3 drivers because certain games don't work with the latest ones.

its completely dust free, cleaned it 2 days ago,

temp right now is 40 - 41 oC on idle, underload how can i test it?

is that repeatly or just random time, btw after it goes black does it need time go to normal, just restart or you wait for a while
blackout could related to the heat, especially after it blackout need a time before it run again
or it just about software like driver, apps that you run or os

i agree sounds like heat, probably the VRM's on it ,when you cleaned it did you fully remove and re tim it?

You can run games/benchmarks in windowed mode and check temps using Realtemp or Gpuz and many other programs. Gpuz will give you the most info just put it on sensor tab then select the "continue to log in background" box and check it after it goes to black screen/driver recovery. Aida64 (the new everest) can also measure VRM temps i think on some cards.

i did not re-tim it, it seems to die at random times. only once a day tho, its weird how its possibly overheating whilst watching movies, the temps never seem to rise

could be that the tim has degraded and poss been disturbed by your cleaning?, you didnt use a plastic tubed hoover per chance( or metal ) it should not be allowed to touch any actual parts in pc as the static on it can blow stuff even if off/ unplugged

One of the first symptoms of a fatal PSU failure for me was the screen blacking out, but it would do it for a few seconds and then come back. Completely random, both on the desktop or 3D gaming. Was driving me crazy and then other stuff started happening... within 3 months I had a dead GFX card and fried motherboard.
