Scythe looks to corner the small form factor market with their latest down-draft, low-profile Big Shuriken 3 cooler. A great solution for systems where space is at a premium, it not only fits in small spaces, but also delivers solid performance with whisper-quiet noise levels.

Can someone please explain to me Scythe's product stack? They have so many huge coolers its hard to figure out which ones are low noise/passive focused vs which ones are intended to be high performance.

I think it would perform better if you replaced the kaze flex fan with a Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM.

Said noctua fan is also nearly double the thickness.... so depending on the case it may not fit. That said, of course a thicker fan with greater static pressure is likely going to perform better.

Fair enough, missed that part, I was more looking at the temp results.

Have one of these on my 3700X. Did replace the stock fan with a Noctua redux 1700, but still worked fine with the stock fan.

You would laugh at the responses. Some like RGB some hate it with a passion. I build systems locally the number of people that will pick trash with LEDs over something far nicer is quite high. Afterall if it didn't sell all vendors wouldn't be pushing them. So i will applaud Scythe for sticking to their roots and just creating a good cooler.

What's nice is, for people who need RGB, you can add that in. Maybe even as an upgrade to performance so it's not just aesthetic.

'' Those building SFF systems will like the cooler's 69 mm total height with the fan, making it great for even the tightest of cases. ''

Not really ! At 70mm height this thing is a no go for true SFF cases ( sub 10L ) such as Sentry , Dan A4 , Ghost S1 etc and it won't even fit in the Node 202 anymore that's a case where Big Shuriken 2 Rev.B had a huge sucess . And for those SFF cases where it does fit such as Ncase M1 , Streacom DA2 etc etc well due to more space there are better options so yeah idk ...... imo Scythe made a mistake by going over 60mm .

Fits the Nouvolo cases which are under 10L.

What I ended up doing was printing my own case haha https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3716832

It would be wise of Scythe to make a RGB version also and ask $10 more.

Yes? what might your problem be with this, that hasn't already been addressed. (note Pros lack of RGB Cons Lack of RGB) It cancels out. Again some won't buy it simply because it lacks it others will because it doesn't depending on the consumers inclination.

Pretty much all of them are low noise and high performance, especially for the price.

Ninja and Mugen are top tier
Fuma is their "mid-range" -> damn solid performance though could use better/quieter fans
Choten and Shuriken are low profile
The rest is budget / out of date

The problem is that the way "Lack of RGB for the gamer crowd" is put sounds denigrating to the "gamer crowd". The "gamer crowd" is not some monolith that wakes up in the morning and goes "RGB everything!"

The problem is that the way "Lack of RGB for the gamer crowd" is put sounds denigrating to the "gamer crowd". The "gamer crowd" is not some monolith that wakes up in the morning and goes "RGB everything!"

And someone seems to have missed where every manufacturer has made it there mission to make everything gamer focused to the absurd degree. If i can't poke fun at that hang it up then. When you have companies sticking gamer gamer gamer on every item, and RGB LEDs as well it has gotten to an absurd degree. To the point most coolers with RGB illumination tend to perform worse than traditional counterparts evidence: pretty much every AIO cooler ever at this point. Even air coolers as well since the RGB fans tend to have a smaller blade surface area and thus lower airflow and lower static pressure all in favor of pretty pretty lights.

Now that said yeah i got RGB stuff in my rig. However it is not on any components that impact performance / noise. To each there own, but at this point RGB and Gamer are synonymous thanks to manufacturers along with the ugly designs and ever increasing prices. Yet consumers eat it up.

Another example older Fractal Design Celsius S24 performs well is fairly quiet for an AIO, it typically beats every other RGB equipped AIO i have tested. It is also depending on the brand nearly $40 cheaper. So yeah ill poke fun at the manufacturers idea of what the gamer crowd is and what they want. Because well I see it every day with systems I build.

I would classify most TPU members as "enthusiasts" go over to reddit and read through the various builds, and discord threads and well you will see the glaring difference.

But I digress, I can't please everyone and I certainly won't try to do so.

Oh absolutely. However the low-profile nature of the cooler+fan Scythe offers here has a specific goal and market focus. The OC'd 8700k that was used to test it was an extreme used case scenario. Most people who will want this cooler will very likely be matching it to a lower wattage CPU and not overclocking, thus the supplied fan will do the job in spades.
"lack of RGB for the gamer crowd" as a negative? lol

Some gamers insist on RGB and consider a lack of it a deal-breaker. However, for the intended use case scenario of this cooler RGB would be a wasted effort as it's likely going to be unseen enclosed behind a small form factor case, most of which do not have viewing windows. Your criticism was unwarranted.

The problem is that the way "Lack of RGB for the gamer crowd" is put sounds denigrating to the "gamer crowd". The "gamer crowd" is not some monolith that wakes up in the morning and goes "RGB everything!"
I have to disagree. Seemed very factually stated to me.

This! Real life is no different. You all would not believe the RGB glitter bomb monstrosities that people ask my shop to build for them on a regular basis.

After spending a fortune on RGB madness which caught me as well I confess. Even though I like and prefer Tempered Glass cases next build will definetely be RGB free at least I won't turn them on.

I noticed not a lot of Thermalright coolers are reviewed here, looks like cryorig is being made obsolete...

Thing is, let's say it's Noctua - I know immediately that the NH-D15 is the absolutely lowest temp I can get from their range. I also know that Noctua aims at roughly the same level of noise across their whole range so a D14 will be slightly higher temp, higher noise, in return for size. D12 doesn't exist, but it's the same deal there. S12? Single stack. Same tradeoff. Etc etc.

With Scythe, I have no way of knowing which of their coolers is their absolute top-performer. The Ninja is, I **THINK** a larger, lower-fin density product than the Mugen, but I don't know if that means lower noise or lower temps in practice compared to a Mugen, since I don't know if the fin density of a Mugen makes it "Louder but cooler", or if they have identical fin density - in which case the Mugen is as to the Ninja, as the D14 is to the D15.

It'd be nice to just be able to look at their stack and say "This is cooling at all costs. This is low noise optimised. Ne'er the twain shall meet."

This isn't a problem just with Scythe - Thermalright has exactly the same issue with their stack and their naming schemes.
