The Imation SSD stutters. The Patriot thing uses a Phison controler, that i've never heard about...
And I don't think the Pci-e thing will give you any noticeable increase in performance.

By the way, if you can afford this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167016, it would make your computer much more responsive, load everything a lot faster and don't do any noise at all

For gaming, not even four Velociraptors in a RAID 0 array on that (or any) controller, will beat the real-world performance of either of those SSDs, unless the stutter is really problematic. For general performance and cost-for-performance standpoint I wouldn't choose SSD personally (not yet), but you said games, and I'm different from most in that I don't care about "snappiness."

I doubt that. You're talking about map loading which is strictly sequential read speeds. All you have to do is the math to realize that a 4xVRaptor RAID0 would be much faster.

I think that's going to depend on the game and what in the game you're talking about—loading maps, loading the game initially, in-game play, etc.—neither RAID nor SSDs are going to provide a significant FPS boost over a single HDD, but for "overall" gaming considerations, I suspect the SSDs will take the cake.

Addendum to my above—

I did some reading, found this, and can't really be sure now. The SSDs tested at the above link were rated for 40-50% the transfer speeds of the ones in question here, but there is no HDD RAID configuration tested in that article. Four Velociraptors would of course smoke the transfer speeds of both SSDs you are considering overall (conditions apply based on disk position of data), but RAID won't fix the latency handicap.

I guess I need to find some more benchmarks. Until then, and depending on the model, number, and RAID configuration of the HDDs you'd be using with the RocketRAID controller, I can't answer definitively.

Not looking for FPS boost just much faster game loading \map loading. Not interested if it's only a bit faster it's gotta be hell fater at it to make it worth while in the 1st place.

If there is any thing getting this comp down it's loading games. Mainly due to running Raid 10 and not running 2 raid 5's + a raid 0 on one of the raid 5's for games which gives MUCH better if done right.

This is also what made me think about getting a raid card as it would free up the CPU some.

I have all of the above (several SSDs and numerous RAID configs including Highpoint, Promise, AMD and Intel, plenty of Raptors)

What is absolutely true, regardless of the silly reviews everyone reads, is that with the exception of $600 SSDs, they all feel about the same, with the exception of the Raptors, which actually feel fast. The SSDs are a pain in the butt. The OCZ 60GB on my daily desktop is massively moody, and it took me several days of OS installs and configuration testing to get it to the point where it was actually "as fast" feeling as the regular WD black that was in there. Now i can boot Vista 64 bit in 30 seconds

On my gamer, I have a Kingston 40GB (which is an intel unit), and that feels reasonably fast, but I only use it for booting. For games, I have an AMD (which is promise based) RAID 5 array that is as fast, if not faster than the the Highpoint controller I removed and then moved to my media server.

Keep in mind that all the goofy benchmarks don't really give anyone any idea how the thing actually feels. Most I/O benchmarks are useless anyway, in that they generate patterns which aren't representative of real workloads.

SSDs are good for certain things.... Booting is one example. But 3Gb/sec of SATA II is not that fast (sounds crazy, I know)

You could probably get pretty snappy map loads if you just put a couple of DW Black drives in RAID 0 as a load device, and do it for much much less than SSDs. Intel, AMD and Nvidia on board RAID is fine too (the idiot reviewers who call it fake RAID know absolutely nothing).

A couple of the product reviews says it has an Indilinx controller, so it's a solid drive. (Look at OCZ Vertex reviews, they're the same) So I see nothing wrong with this one.

Cheers, Dunno if i should get one or get a sound card. Either will have to be up to par or they will go back lol.
